Looking forward to attending this event this coming Saturday. Flying out to San Diego early on Friday and stating at the Omni.

This is my favorite knife show for so many reasons . . . the importance and history of the show itself stretching back more than three decades, the ability to see and handle some of the most amazing knives that I will see all year and to discuss them with many of the very finest knife makers in the world, the possibility of obtaining one or more of these special knives, the excitement of the drawings, the "class" of the event itself, the camaraderie and discussion with other collectors who appreciate this genre . . .

If it ever works out for you to attend one of these events, I highly recommend it. Even if you are not a fan of "art knives" I think you will be interested and perhaps fascinated by some of the creations that you will see exhibited, and the opportunity to meet some true knifemaking legends who rarely appear at other shows in this country.

I will use this thread to post a review of the show over the weekend, as I have done in the past. I am determined this time to take more pictures and notes and post a more complete review than in the past.

If any of the other posters here are planning to be there and are interested in meeting up for an adult beverage and maybe dinner on Friday, send me a PM.

2011 AKI was my first knife show.
I will never forget the totality of that experience.

Hope you have a great show, Ken, I know I'll be looking forward to your report.

Looking forward to seeing some pics and a report. I am totally bummed. I was supposed to go to the show. Had my tickets to the show, airline and hotel booked. Family medical emergency, had to cancel everything. Figures right. Was going to be my first AKI. So no pressure here :) but am relying on you to show me what I missed!
And Btw, Phil was kind enough to refund the money for the show tickets. First class guy!
Have fun and good luck. Hope you draw something great!
Ken

I saw that the show is limited to 175 buyers but can anyone go and buy a ticket at the door to get in? Or does the ticket have to be purchased in advance? I'm very interested in going but finding out about this kind of late...

Usually have to buy a ticket in advance. Email Phil lobred and ask him. His email is on the AKI website.

if anyone is able to obtain an extra catalogue, I would love to add one to my collection of a few of the ones in the past

The 2001 San Diego AKI Show was where I introduced the concept
of my first book "Art and Design in Modern Custom Folding Knives".

That year I was Phil Lobred's guest and he even let me use
his suit at the hotel to make my book-concept presentation....

The 2015 Show will be the second time I miss this show in 15 years,
and I MISS it and everyone involved....!!!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

The limited edition of my latest book
is still available from:

And probably also at the AKI...

Thanks for your thoughts Ken. There are two AKI threads and I added to the other one, but only because it's drawing folks in for the vids.

I agree with your assessments, as is not uncommon.
