Article: 5 Surprising Uses for the SAK

They left out lock picking.

A while back I used a public restroom. After taking care of business, I pulled the last two squares of toilet paper off the role and although there was a container of spare rolls of toilet paper, it was locked. It took a special key that I guess the janitors had. Taking the Executive nail file, I inserted it into the keyhole and wiggled it back and forth, and it actually opened the simple lock mechanism. The spear shaped tip with the narrow waist in back of it makes a very decent lock pick, as does the awl on the Wenger SI/pioneer. I've used the pioneer awl on the standard file cabinet lock to open drawers. It has a nice taper to let you get passed the tumblers.

Also, the tweezers of a SAK can open standard police handcuffs once you know how the mechanism works. If the cuffs are locked, any ball point pen, paper clip, thumb tack, safety pin can push the lock off, then you release the toothed lock that holds them shut with the tweezers. If they are well worn handcuffs, even the toothpick will work. Paper clips work well too.

Thanks for sharing, jackknife! Great info; I never would have thought of that.
