Article about Wootz/Bulat and Ivan Kirpichev

I read the article but wasnt really sure what Persian Crucible steel was. It, from the pic, looks like damascus?

Interesting blades.

Persian curcible steel is the modern incarnation of Wootz steel. That is the steel that you think of when you think about the amazing ancient swords. What is sold today as Damascus chould be more properly called pattern welded steel. The two are very different creatures

Interesting blades.

Bulat (russian) Pulad (persian) Wootz (Indian)

is same or pretty similar ancient high carbon steel or rater steel composit made the way that steel has some carbon substructures which make it like reinforsed concrete.

It is the original damascus, but is very different from pattern welded damascus, which is what is most commonly used to make blades.

Manouchehr's the man! You should check out his book on arms and armor from Iran.

Thanks for the link, Vassili!

Wow, this is just hit me only now!

Major expert in persian arms admit that Ivan made

"blade that exactly resembled the old Persian blades"!

and

"finding out the mystery of making high-quality crucible steel blades"

and

"pattern has the high-quality woodgrain or mottle damask seen on high-quality Persian blades. Even the background color matches the color of the high-quality Persian blades".

It is hard to belive that only few years ago Ivan give away his blade for everybody just to test his first bulat experiments (may be you remember my posts) and now Manouchehr - as I understand expert in old persian arms congratulating him for his achivement! Unbelivable.

Keith did you manage to get one of his blades?

Thanks, Vassili.
