I read an interesting article recently on Survivalblog.com about using an air rifle to put meat on the table.

Due to financial circumstances I found myself living out of the back of my pick-up for several months on public lands in South West mostly BLM and NF mostly. Just before setting out I

Does anyone here have an airgun setup for something like this? I've got the 2100 he mentioned using, although I don't quite know how he stores stuff in the buttstock...maybe he's referring to an older model:confused:

from skimming the article he's only storing a set of seals in the stock.

a little googling suggests that the stock is wood grained synthetic. but i don't know if the buttplate is removable or molded into the stock. if it is removable, you could carve out the wood or foam easily enough. i don't expect it to be slid plastic. that would be tougher to work with.

if the budget permitted, i'd want either a higher velocity/higher quality rifle, or possibly a .22 air rifle instead of a .177.

i've known people who've bought Gamo or other stuff higher grade than the Crossman, but not outrageously priced... but i know a few with nice German made air rifles.

my only air rifle is a $60 CZ target rifle and the velocity is a bit low for hunting. i'd have to use one of my .22s and several of them like the inexpensive Federal bulk pack.

as long as the budget allows, buy quality, cry once.

airgun hunting is very feasable (sp?). I have a crosman 760 I have used to take some squirrels over the years. I also have a cheap chinese pellet rifle that has taken a few. You can get some good pellet rifles at compasseco.com.

one thing thats nice about air rifles, is they can be used in villages/cities.

and if you are going to harvest animals, pellets work better than BB's, but you might want to get lead-free pellets. Also, pellets are more accurate han BB's.

I have used airguns to put small game on the table for several years. I use several different models and styles of air rifle everything from CO2 to pneumatic (multi pump like the 2100) to higher end PCP (pre charged pneumatics). My go to pneumatic is the Benjamin 392

Mine has a Mac1(http://www.mac1airgun.com/index.htm) Steroid tune and a billet lever brings the Fps up to around 900 fps and makes it a true small game killer. That being said a 392 or a 2100 is a real good close range small game taker. I do disagree with the author of the article you posted though. I don't think BB's kill as cleanly enough for regular hunting. I think you will have better success with quality pellets. The true secret to hunting with an air gun is shot placement and knowing your and your airguns limitations. I think on the 2100 the butstock is hollow if you remove the 2 screws from the butt pad it should allow you access to the butt stock.

There are youtube vids of guys killing hogs with pellet guns. It's easy as a gun person to say "well why would I ever do that, why not just use a .22?" Well the report of a pellet gun is generally much under that of a .22 (unless using CCI CBs or the like) for those situations where you're wanting to be as low profile as possible.
