Just found this free article on knife sharpening on the 'net. Just downloaded it, and haven't had time to go through it all yet, but I present it for you consideration. What little I've looked the article over is seems fairly solid.

That article has been around a while, and it is very good reading. Actually, I would say it should be required reading for knife nuts and sharpening geeks. I've read it a few times and it has a lot of excellent information in it.
