Hey y'all,

I'm trying to make a handle from an old artillery shell. I'm trying to fill the shell with an epoxy or resin before slotting and inserting my blade. Any suggestions on brand/type?

I'm assuming you mean a machine gun shell, as artillery shells would make a HUGE handle. 50 caliber and 20mm shell casings make good handles, depending on the blade size.

A better idea than filling completely with resin is to fill the shell with epoxy about half way up, and then stick a dowel that is a tad smaller than the neck in. Push down until it squeezes out the excess epoxy and hits bottom. Wipe off the excess epoxy, and once it is gelled, clean the outside with denatured alcohol. Let it cure overnight, cut off the excess dowel, and drill the dowel just like you would a normal handle.

I just saw one example using a 50 Cal casing that is set up like stick tang, threaded at the end then capped at the primer hole with a brass acorn nut.

Make sure you post up the final product.

Do you plan on setting the blade before or after the epoxy cures?

Are you going after something like this?

I like the idea.
I'm going to slot the casing and primer end, insert the tang (either full or 3/4) and epoxy it together. I want the bullet head to be the "pommel" of the knife. The casing is about 1in or 1.5in in diameter. I don't have it in front of me.
