Hey everyone,

I'm tempted to get a small centauri with a damascus blade, but looking around, I see that some shops advertise the damascus as being Damasteel, and some others only say damascus without any more details. Looking at the ArtisanCutlery website, I don't find any reference to Damasteel, so I'm wondering if the shops advertising it as such are correct or not.

Does anyone know where their damascus blades come from and what they're worth?

What they're worth? The prices are given on their website.
Not speaking of value in terms of price here, but in terms of quality. I'm wondering if that's cheap damascus from nobody knows where, or if it comes from a reputable source.

I'm seeing the option for a Damasteel blade on the Centauri direct from Artisan. The fact that it costs the same as the S35VN option does leave me wondering though. The pattern doesn't seem to quite fit any of the Damasteel patterns I'm aware of.

They are a Yangjiang China factory maker. I doubt anyone knows where they source it. And I'd be surprised if it wasn't cheap. But who knows.

Oh you're right, I had only used the search feature and looked at the specs, but didn't notice it was advertised as such in the checkout options. But I agree that the price would be surprising low for damasteel, hence me wondering ^^.

Fair point, I didn't know it was a Chinese maker (could have done a bit more research...).

Urban legend says the Artisan Cutlerly and CIVIVI damascus is made from over 600 layers of unsold Kizer and Kubey knives. Pattern welded and forged into a billet. Sometimes you can make out a pivot screw in the pattern.

I hear that Artisan Damascus is made with VG 10. I think that is what I heard in popular YT reviews from Birdshot IV.
It does seem to take and hold an edge well.

I searched ArtisanCutlery.net for Damasteel and didn't get any hits. Not sure where people are seeing Damasteel advertised. I couldn't find it.

I hope they aren’t using the name Damasteel for another type of Damascus. That would be very irresponsible.
I agree, but the fact they don't advertise it in their product description in other online shops but still mention it if you search their website enough makes me a bit suspicious.

That was my finding too at first, but if you visit the page for a damascus knife you'll see "Damasteel" mentionned on the right as a checkout choice. Look here for example. That's really confusing to see so few mentions of it, usually when makers use Damasteel they use it as a selling argument and you don't struggle like that to find a mention of it.

You are right. At best it seems like a mistake, at worst it's false advertising. It is misleading and irresponsible.

Incompetence being even more common than malice I suppose we should consider that this could well be an innocent mistake by someone who is mistaking damasteel as a generic term for damascus.

Yes, I think that if that was intentional false advertising, we'd find much more references to it. Probably just a mistake (blame the intern!).

I think I remember seeing where CIVIVI Damascus was based on 9cr18mov but I can’t find the source.

I’ve read that myself. I’m pretty sure it was a Civivi rep who stated that.
