Found some damascus billets that interest me. they are 1095 and AS203E steel. Have not heard of AS203E. Can anyone fill me in on what this stuff is? The search here and google turned up zilch..
Thanks...Curt
A203E is low carbon steel with 2-3% nickle. It etches very good. If the damascus is 70% to 80% 1095 with the rest A203E it will be good blade steel. If it's more like 50-50 or 60-40 then not so good. A203E was the main mix for damascus until folks started using L6 and 15N20 to mix with the high carbon. I like it and still use it some but I make sure to use 70% or more high carbon in the mix. It seems to etch brighter than L6 or 15N20.
