ASAP Long Term Storage

So, I'm sitting here at my teeny desk and pick up my ASAP Idaho 298GY ATS-34 to goof with.

Got a pair of them and think the world of them. One is in my EDC rotation and the other a spare in the event I lose/break the current EDC.

Here's the question...
As they are obviously spring loaded...should they be stored opened or closed to eliminate long term tension problems with the spring (ASAP) system?

Thanks...

I keep my Tempest closed... I remember this coming topic coming up once before and the answer was that it did not really matter how they are stored IIRC.

Someone is being a little anal about their knives.... ;) :D

I remember my dad and I discussing this about his high $$ pruners. He insisted keeping them open for better spring life while I always closed them for safety. Of course he was always right

Interesting points.
I have just bought a Tempest.
Buck ship the ASAP's folded as with all their folders IIRC.
There is only one reported failure of one ASAP product (Buck Rush)
failing in the UK (one spring failed)on the British Blades web site.
The warranty that Buck offer would give me peace of mind, more so if you are in the U.S:thumbup:

I'm sure you fellas may have seen as some of your knife makers sell pieces on there.
Its very politically correct but there is some knowledge to go with it.
Its a small site compared with US based types.
Some good knowledge in there & supported by the Swedish & Norwegian knife makers.

It cant compete with the massive knowledge base here imho.

Cheers

Yes, it's nice that you've finally put up a personal photo so we all know what you look like. :D

Don't give me any beak Chicken Trax...
It's my thread and I can 'jack it if I want to ;)

It's obvious that youse guyz want someone to make fun of today...so I'll give you some ammunition... ;)

I had a bad cold last week; did some work on my Vette Monday, and Tuesday morning I woke up and it was really quiet out...I thought that was odd, because I could see cars driving by but couldn't hear them...Went to work; couldn't hardly hear anyone...after about a half-hour, I sneezed, and fell over onto some cartons...Finally went to the doctor; I have a sinus infection and it's affecting my hearing and balance...

Funny, huh??? :D

I guess you had to be there...

Trax,
I truly hope you're feeling better soon. I guess that's why your
avatar shows you lying on your back with your legs (minus the feet)
up in the air!

No, it doesn't seem funny to me at all that you are sick.
Your pic on the can is though.

I hate to bring this back to the topic at hand, but if Knives are like guns--it doesn't matter on the springs. It is not compressed or extended that matters, but the number of compressions that matters.

That's not a great correlation. The springs in this sense are not the same kind of springs in guns that get compressed.

Now, I've had my Rush for 3 years and there are two noteworthy things I have to say about the ASAP system. 1) I've personally taken apart my Rush and was very impressed by the fact that there are in fact two coil springs powering the opening. No wonder it snaps open so fast. Also, the design of the coil springs spreads out the tension much better than standard coil springs in auto knives so as to increase the life of them. 2) I have stored my Rush closed the entire time I've owned it, and I have cycled it easily 10,000 times or more in that time. I'm kind of a compulsive flicker with assisted knives, just can't keep from playing with them. I've never had any problems or even the hint of a problem from my Rush. I say store it closed and flick it often, that's my motto.
