I've got my eye on a serrated Scimitar. Made in Japan. How do I know if it's aus8 or vg1?

The old voyagers had a VG1 stamp. If it wasn't stamped it was Aus 8. If it is not stamped I would assume the worst.

Assume the worst? Not sure exactly what that means. It's not like AUS-8 is crap steel. Anyway, I had a Scimitar in AUS-8 years ago. One of the sharpest knives out of the box I've ever owned. The downside is that the linerlock wore rather quickly and the knife developed a bit of up/down play. Cold Steel has since improved the overall design with the Talwar.
