DMT hones are supposed to use monocrystalline diamonds, claiming they don't break down like the polycrystalline diamonds used by Eze-Lap and others. Both DMT and Eze-Lap bond the diamonds to a steel plate (with nickel IIRC) and there could be differeneces in the bond too.

My experience is DMT hones keep their aggression better than Eze-Lap. But the Eze-Laps, once they get to a certain point, continue to work OK, just not nearly as fast as when new.

Opinions differ about which is the better value. I think DMTs are better hones, but they are more costly, so.....???

DMT makes two lines of plates. One is a thin plate with small holes through out and bonded to a plastic base, the other line is called the "Machinist" and it is a solid metal plate that looks more like the E-Z lap. I can tell you from over ten years of experience with E-Z Lap and three years with the DMT Machinist that the DMT is well worth the addition money. My favorite bench stone is a 3X8 inch DMT Machinist.

DMT is usually the more expensive of the two when I've bought them. I have both and use them on occasion. The EZELap are so inexpensive that I have more experience with them. Both degrade with use over time and personally I prefer them well used because I only use them for quick light stroke touch ups much the way most everyone else uses ceramic.

I would say if you found a place where the DMT is less $ that it is probably the better buy but without seeing it it is hard to be sure.
