ASH-1 Question

This will probably sound like a stupid question, but here goes:

I'm after an ASH-1, but as far as blade thickness goes, are all CG's .32 & all LE's .22? Or do they vary?

Cheers

That's the way it goes in general. You might find a slight variation but in general those are the dimensions. Also the Skinny ASH-1 is .187" - .19"

Thanks, that confirms what I deduced.

Obviously it's going to depend to a large degree on application, but is there a general concensus on the better / more useful of the two variants/thickness's? Or is it solely down to personal preference & what you're going to use it for?

Well its always going to depend on use, but I think the .22 variety can perform a wider array of functions efficiently. You're thinking you want a serious tough knife, but imo once you hold the CG its just too much. To heavy to carry for a knife its size. Too thick to slice well, not long enough to chop for a knife its weight, etc. Its ideal uses are limited. Its really a sharpened pry bar.

I picked up a Skinny ASH and like it. If you're looking for a nice all-around knife and not out to chop trees down (use an ax) the Boss Jack is currently available new from Busse. That's usually the best way to buy a Busse, the prices don't go down on the secondary market unless it was a real user and got real used :)

i use my skinny ash more than any of the ash models, the ash-1 le would be my second choice.

I certainly agree with Skunk! I pick up my Skinny or LE whenever I go in the woods!

I used the cg for a couple years. It is a tank! It will do anything you want it to. I have chopped, batoned, and butchered an elk with it.

It is a thick sucker.

The extra weight of the CG makes it a better chopper for it's size. If it was the only knife you are bringing to the dance, you might want the thicker one.

You won't be under knife-ed with either of the other versions either. The LE is lovely, and I think at .22 it a very reasonable thickness for that sized blade.

A lot of people think the skinny is the way to go. It sure is strong enough for anything I can think of. Basically impossible to destroy by any reasonable or unreasonable use.

Thanks for all your replies.

It's seems fairly unanimous: the LE would be the preferred blade over the CG for anythging short of logging!

It's going to be going into my go-bag, which already has a Grunsfor Bruks Small Forest Axe & a Spyderco Civilian (amongst other items...), so all round performance is preferred to out-and-out chopping ability.

One other quick question: "Double Cut" does this refer to a secondary bevel, is part of the top of the blade sharpened or what is it? Apologies for yet another noob-Q!

double cut applies to the blade finish, it is a matte finish, no coating, no glare.

the blade is rough cut/blasted with a course grit compound to remove light machining/grinding marks then blasted again with probably a glass bead compound to smooth the first and seal the pours of the metal. i have never had one rust with normal care.

Thankyou, that clears that up.

I appreciate all of your assistance, it's probably high time I stopped procrastinating & opened my wallet instead!
