Ash Cake's

Oh, I wouldn't mind eating that stuff. I have thrown potatoes on the fire before, but that's not "bread" like the cakes you are talking about. The potatoes came out great though .

Bannock (biscuits to most) is a great camp food, mix the flour at home, add water and throw the dough on a flat rock or right in the hot ashes. Nothing like fresh warm bread and a hot cup of tea to brighten your spirits when its a chilly evening.

I have had them with Cinnamon, they were ok and definatley beat going hungry. If you scrape off the coal it really just tastes like a thick bread but I found that you certainly can over cook this food if your not careful.

Funny this website recommends a knife with a blade of 6-10 inches.

Mix a little baking powder with it Liam, comes up lighter/puffier. Raisins can take away a bland tasting Bannock also. I've probably had half a dozen variations, some definately better than others. Mine is pretty crude though.:D

Oh yeah, I have a recipe my native friend gave me, a little salt and suger too.
I have to try the raisins out next time.
One other way I need to try is wrap it around a green stick and roast it like a marshmallow.

I was going to make this on my recent camping trip, but we ran out of time. I had some brown sugar I was going to try out along with some raisins. Ray Mears tops it with some rum for flavor!

What are your full bannock recipes? I'd love to try some different ones out.

I like tater cakes. Mix a stiff dough using mashed potato flakes with a bit of chopped onion and a dash of salt, flatten patties and cook them on clean ash over a bed of coals or on a flat rock in the middle of a coal bed. Old fashioned hoe cakes can be made the same way with jiffy cornbread mix.

Sounds like damper to me (old Australian bush food). Had them bazillions of times. Good with butter and jam :)
