When comparing these two blades against one another...the ASH1, based on its blade style, thickness & length etc... what is it best suited for?

And the same question for the SFNO?

What are the pros/cons that each blade style pocesses when compared to one another?

Good thread. Both seem like they could be great choppers, (both are safe queens) but when I get the CG ASH it will be a user. They both feel great in my hand, but they ASH 1 fits my hand like a glove, especially with the mags.

I'll be using my ASH1-LE when it gets here. It looks like the back of the handle could give some 'pinky-pinch' when used for heavy chopping, but we'll see. At 6-ish inches it's not going to be a real chopper anyway.

I still really, really want an SFNO. If it hadn't been for the Special ASH1 offer, I probably wouldn't have bothered with an ASH1. Yeah, right! Dream on... I had to do it. It just meant I bought two rather than one.

I should have specified, that the ASH1 & SFNO that I am asking to be compared to one another...are the CG of each model. I am shocked to see that the CG ASH1 is coming in at a whopping .32" thick...thats what the FFBM measures at isnt't it?

I dont know how drastically that will change the comparision to the SFNO, but I would love to here more opinions:thumbup:

At .320 it should compare very well against a SFNO and may likely out chop it. The main issue that made the ASH1 a mediocre chopper was balance. Now that it is at .320 that balance should come forward a little more because the metal to handle material ratio. Of course this is all theory until I try one out. At least this is what I am hoping and I am sticking to it :D

Excellent question. I have ot used ueither nor do I know if anyone outh there has the thick .320 CG model. I look at this to be an all arounder like the NO-E. I am guessing the CG SFNO and ASH1 fill the same niche with slight differences.

What else guys? :)

I have an SFNO and cannot wait to compare the two. Diff handles, diff blade shapes, diff thickness's but similar lengths. Should be interesting. I have never held an ASH-1 so I cannot say....but darnet I cant wait too!

I am pretty sure there is not too much either one can not do. I am jost really interested on how the ASH1 handle is going to feel.

Agreed on teh balance thingy. .32 shoudl give it more fwd weight. SHOULD. It's the very question I've been asking myself. . . as if I'll pass up a CG and a HOG one anyhoo. ;) (The LE comes almost as a bonus at that point. LOL)

My thoughts exactly :D

I too was wondering just where it fit in your lineups. Less of a chopper than the FBM, too big IMHO for the "ideal all around camp" chores, size makes it illegal to carry here, and its too fat for a slicer.
I know why they are ordered "cause its the anniversary edition and you can" but I'm not sure what chores this would excel at. It is handsome tho!

I am hoping that it will fit in the one knife do it all category. Jack of all trades master at none. It sure is beautiful.

The SFNO (kinda like a Ratweiler) is a great one-knife-does-it-all. In all fairness, the Ratweiler is a better chopper, the SFNO is a better slicer.

The ASH1-SE grips don't work for me as a non-mag. That's not surprising as most standard grips don't fit me well but the mags and hand-ground customs fit great. That said, the ASH1-SE may become my newest kitchen blade! Thin, tall, etc.

The CG-SFNO with mags will work much like the SFNO, I expect. One-knife-does-it-all.

Good luck!

Wouldn't it be nice if we could really settle on one!!!!!!!!!! The search continues.

Hehehe.... I WISH! But for now it is the Standard FSH or the HHFSH. That may or may not change with the CG ASH1.

I think this could be as good as a balanced-knife as teh SFNO and/or the Camp Tramp.

With that full-height grind, it'll slice fine. It's tall for it, but so is a good chef's knife.

With the .320, I think it'll chop well, even for it's compact size. Will it take down a 2' thick mighty oak? No. But neither will the FBM. How much stuff are you guys chopping down on a camp-out anyhow?

My only fear is the balance point is still too far back. It needs to be around the choil, not the first-fastener. Where's da boss when you need him?

Well, I really don't use a knife for chopping anyway. I use a hatchet or a saw. I play at chopping with one occasionally but my camp chores are more in the line of cutting rope, skinning fish or game, food prep, etc: no really big chores there. A smaller knife works fine for those although I'm sure the ASH1 would do fine too. I passed on this one and the critical time is over "I think" I usually give in while the frenzy is going but I slept thru that one. I have more Busse than I can use in a lifetime (hell, probably several lifetimes) already so I will most likely enjoy it thru you guys' posts and stories.
This is indeed a goodun though!

The limitation on this one's chopping ability will come from the handle design --- swing it for very long and you'll be nursing a wounded pinky...

I think it'll do almost everything else well, and like you guys said - "who needs to do a lot of chopping with a knife anyway..." I think it'll be an excellent all-arounder for the non-chopping situations.

I do wish it were 3/16 though --- but that's what Ban is for!

With the full flat grind the CG ASH-1 may compare very favorably with a .25" sabre grind... with the added bonus of better chopping because of the heft.

Anyone know how the CG with the Mags will weigh?
