I would go and visit Kayne and Sons blacksmith supply and they could hook you up with tons of folks in that area. Also known as Blacksmith's Depot online. They are great folks and make you feel welcome when you stop by. Can't say enough nice things about them. Just down the road in Candler.

I'm in NC, but near the coast.

Your best bet to is check the NC knife makers guild website to see if there is a maker near you that might be willing to help.

http://www.ncknifeguild.org/

Be sure to check out their forum, as you are likely to get a response from makers in the area.

They have a meeting coming up on Jan 22nd. You might want to attend the chat with some of the makers.

The guild also offers knife making classes at Montgomery Community College in Troy.

Bruce,
I am in Lexington N.C. I would also like to extend an invitation to join us at the guild meeting in Troy. There are some great makers willing to share all the info we have. At this meeting we will start making a Quillan dagger. Also forge a 4" hunter. Would be great to see you there. You may also find a maker there that lives in your area.

ABS Mastersmith Dan Winkler lives in Blowing Rock, and ABS Mastersmith Burt Foster lives in Bristol, Virginia - just across the TN state line

I live in Hayesville, N. C. 2 hrs. west of Ashville. You are welcome at my shop. I only do stock removal if that is what you are interested in. I am usually in the shop 6 days a week.No charges. Mike 828 389 8145

Wow, I an quite surprised nobody has mentioned that the ABS has bladesmithing classes at Haywood College right there in correlation to Asheville. I know because I have taught Intro to Bladesmithing and quillon daggers. In fact, I will be there in a week and a half to teach another quillon dagger course, if folks are sharing how to make daggers in the area, I would not be surprised to find my students connected in some way. They hold hammer-ins as well, and after teaching for years at the AR ABS school I really like the facilities at Haywood College, the staff are accommodating and friendly, and the facilities are top notch. As soon as I return from NC I will get to compare all the schools when I get to teach an Intro course in the ABS school in Maine at the end of February, but in all my years of teaching at all the locations I have not had as much fun and enjoyment as I have at Haywood, Asheville and Clyde. The people are the best and sometimes my face hurts from smiling and laughing so much, but the knives produced are really good.

For what it's worth, I also suggest stopping by the Guild meeting, you'll meet many makers who don't come online. I'll be there too. You can also see some of the facilities that Troy CC uses for the knifemaking classes held there.

Google the Palmetto Cutlery club. I'm a member there and it's about an hour or hour and a half from your home. We meet every first Tuesday in Greer, SC. Guests are always welcome. If you are interested I could meet you where US25 comes into Greenville and take you to the meeting. I'm just getting started myself.
We have some great stock removal makers there. Some whose knives are widely collected and sought after.

I'm from Spruce Pine, which is about an hour from Asheville. Mr. Cashen is right about Haywood. I've been taking classes there for a few years now with the instructor, David Burnette, and he's not only a great teacher, but about the nicest guy you're liable to meet. There's a monthly knife club meeting there on the first Tuesday of the month, and it's a great time. At least I think so. It's maybe a half hour from Asheville. It's more than worth it, especially seeing as how there are some VERY talented smith's and makers that attend the meetings and frequent the school. They usually disregard me, though, on account of my not liking John Wayne very much, haha.

... David Burnette, and he's not only a great teacher, but about the nicest guy you're liable to meet...

You got that right, David is not only a really great guy, he is a frighteningly talented smith. But I would have to agree with them that anybody not liking the Duke has to get their mind right;).

Tryon Arts and Craft School at Tryon, NC has a 5 forge smithy and teaches basic blacksmithing and bladesmithing. There is a bladesmithing class scheduled for Feb 26 and 27th that might still have an opening. You would not become an accomplished knife maker over a week-end but it would sure give you a good taste. You would forge, grind, heat treat temper and install a handle on one complete knife and take home up to three more finished blanks to complete in your own shop. And we have a lot of fun. They can be reached at 828-859-8323

Bruce,

Another opportunity to meeting some of the knife makers in the area is at the monthly meeting of the Haywood Community College Knife Maker’s Club. The club is made up of student and smiths with an interest in knife making. The club meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. The meetings are held in 3300 the Industrial Systems building. If you need more information let me know.
