I currently have Comcast cable high speed internet. I am building a new house in an area that does not have cable. Do any of you guys have any ideas of what type of internet connection I can use? I will have Direct TV that has internet service but I don't know how good that is. Thanks for your help, ronybear....

We use an "air card" from Verizon-almost all the cell companies have them.You can take it anywhere and have internet connection-plugs into your USB port.They also have My-Fi where you can connect up to 5 computers from their plug in router,but it's not transportable.

DSL is probably out.
3g cellular maybe.
Satellite maybe.
WIMAX or 4g? Doubtful, but you could check with Sprint or Clearwire.

My only option right now is dial up
So I use my smart phone from t mobile there is an app called pda net u can down load for free and hook up through usb just make sure u have the data plan it is not the fastest thing in the world but can stream tv so its goodenough for me I want to get a 4g phone so it will be even faster

My wife has a little, credit card sized "MyFi" device from Verizon that acts as you describe but is not tethered to anything. It directly accesses the internet over Verizon wireless ... and works wonderfully well.

Wish I could help Ron, but I haven't a clue. BTW you have some Great Holidays!

Check out with local phone companies for DSL. When I moved into my new house I could no longer get Comcast which I miss and had to get DSL.

Satellite is another option.

Sprint Overdrive
4g/3g
little hotspot box supports quite
a few connections

Good luck in your new home!

ron, I had DirectTV for a while, and it was fine. Now I have Verizon Fios (Fiberoptic cable) and it's great, but may not be available where you are.

I'd rank the possible services like this, best to worst.
* fiber
* cable or DSL
* local wireless internet provider
* cell phone network service
* satellite

Satellite works just about everywhere, but it has very high latency which will make web browsing not so great. It's probably okay for light use. Cell service is just fine (I'm using it to submit this post :D), but new plans are often limited to 5 or 10 GB transferred per month.

If you can find a local wireless internet provider, that might provide unlimited data transfer and similar speed to a cell network. Providers like that usually use a technology such as WIMAX that lets them cover a radius of a few miles up to a few dozen miles. They're usually small outfits, so reliability and customer service vary.

depending on what kind of cell signal you get, I'd go with one of the 3g wireless option suggested above. Sprint, Verizon, etc... -- I currently use the Verizon my-fi, but am looking at a virgin mobile alternative for $40 a month rather than the $62 Verizon charges.
These devices will feed internet to up to 5 computers with wireless cards once configured for each machine. (abou5t 10 minutes of letting it talk to itself each)
