Some of you might have read my earlier post..

I will be travelling from ohio to costa rica on motorcycle alone to take a new job as a scuba instructor. Living in a tent most of the way. Ive sold my pistol so I wouldnt be tempted to take it with me and now im looking for a little bit of protection. Specifically looking for an underarm sheath with kydex sheath. I see good reviews for the mercharness and very tempted to purchase "who can beat that price" just wondering wha else is out there and if anybody has any advice on which type or knife to purchase... Never owned more than a pocket knife for everyday purpose. Thanks everyone

Merchharness all the way! even if u dont use it on CRKT's NECK knife. i just bought another to use on my RAT RC-4.
it feels great and doesnt print at all!

If it were me I would go with a tactical type folder and drop the concealed carry idea. However that's just me. I also don't know what the local laws are there but I would look into that first.

Another option to consider might be mounting a smallish machete somewhere on the bike. Not ideal but should be fairly easy to explain away in that part of the world. Especially if your camping.

Although not ideal, it's another option.

Here's the best advice I can give ya for travelin', if ya want somethin' for SD go as sheeple friendly as possible.

Don't want trouble, don't go lookin' like a Merc., a good lockin' blade with a traditional pattern, a Hunter or maybe a Buck 110, even a fb hunter would be better than any Tactical lookin' knife, it'll draw less attention to you and in the end isn't that what ya want?

Maybe consider bear pepper spray or a taser for longer reach along with your other options.

Don't bring anything you value. I would bet my next paycheck a valuable blade won't make it to your destination. Too many border crossings and muddy laws.

+1 on a Wally World Buck 110

costa rica,not mexico

There's a slim chance :D that he'll have to go through Mexico to get to Costa Rica if traveling by motorcycle ;).

+2 on the Wally World Buck 110.

It's inexpensive to replace, and it's been around for over forty years and has been copied around the world so it's familiar and common looking.
And it's kind of a traditional "biker's knife".

Good luck and safe journey,

The only thing I carry that I would use in a defense situation is my flashlight. I say get a 60+ lumen light with a clip (like the Streamlight TL-2 LED @ 120L for $70), and carry that plus a not tooo expensive folder like a full size Griptilian. I typically carry a folder in RF pocket, and the light clipped in the farthest side of the right pocket.. If someone were to attempt to assault me, I'd blast them in the eyes with the brightest setting of the light, temporarily blinding them, and either run, or use the light in a kubaton type method... ie., hit them with the bezel on the noggin'. Using a knife in a tactical method is simply ludicrous unless your purpose is DeAniMaTiOn. It is simply an assumption that the other person is gonna play fair. They might have an "Ace" up their sleeve and just shoot you in the head. Pulling out a knife just gives the other person a "green light" to do whatever it takes to make you go "night night." Dealing with the "authorities is FUN too.. In Mexico, DISCREEEEET is the word... If you have a neat toy, and look like anything other than a priest, they will take it from you just because they like it. ...if you "cause problems," they'll pull a little baggie of cocaine out of their personal stash and say they found it on you, beat the sh!t out of you, and throw you in jail... that is, of course, depending on how much money you have on you... they might just take your possessions, money, and send you on your way. The thing about Mexico is that the cops are worse than the "criminals." In Mexico, you want to carry everything concealed. I prefer carrying a folder IWB there. In Mexico, you should treat the police, and especially the Federales, like the head family of organized crime. They make the rules, and can break them. The civilians are afraid of them, and will not help you. They have been convinced to rely on others to "protect" them...Sound like organized criminal behavior, MUCH??? Unfortunately, MY country, the United States of America, is heading this way with the rest of the world. ...To Quote Benjamin Franklin, "Those who value security over freedom deserve neither."

First off, I wouldn't travel alone in Mexico. Second, I wouldn't go on a motorcycle, too stealable. You will meet people who will kill you, beat you, and steal everything you have, and that's just the police and military. Third, strap a machete to the bike so that is easily accessable.

Have you considered sending the bike freight and buying a plane ticket? You are going through a lot of place that are less then civilized to say the least. If there is an added expense it might be worth it for the peace of mind alone. Not worth risking your life for a few bucks.

Well, selling your pistol wasn't a good start. Also, waving a Buck 110 around isn't going to do you a lot of good. If you're not limited by blade length, I recommend you consider a Cold Steel OSS, an inexpensive knife that's light and formidable. You can also use it while diving to keep the great whites from nibbling on your fins.

If you feel like carrying a folder, get a Cold Steel Vaquero 6-inch or one of the Rajahs.

I'm kinda curious...what blade do you think is good to wave around?

A gringo south of the border who is carrying a tactical blade is just asking to be thrown into a 3rd world jail. Anyone saying otherwise is talking out the wrong orifice.

Sounds like a fun trip, but my road trip would stop about 50 miles before the border of mexico. Expect to be hassled A LOT, and being on a motorcycle makes you one helluva target. You should have kept the pistol and at least have carried that concealed under a jacket or something.

If I was you I would at least get an emerson knife with the rapid deployment holster so that you can whip it out from your hip instead of fighting with your pocket to get it out.

I would agree on the plane ticket, or take a boat cruise, just anything that keeps you from traveling through such a place.
