ASP vs. Monadnock?

Hi. Just got a Monadnock Autolock 26", and while I LOVE it, it is a bit heavy for EDC. SO, I'm considering an ASP.

I've been doing LOTS of research here, and am still sorta confused.

1) Read lots of problems with the Airweights locking open permanently. How do the "regular" steel versions compare?

2) How much weight difference is there between, say, a 21" airweight and a 21" Steel?

3) Would you recommend the 21, or is it too short? The 26" Monadnock I have is almost too big.

Thanks!

Also, does anyone know the weight difference between a 21" ASP steel and my 26" Autolock?

Thanks

I carry as EDC a 21" ASP regular steel(actually isnt it aircraft aluminum but whatever) Anyways it's 16-17Oz. So you can compare that to what yours weighs and you will know the differnce. I cant comment on differnces since i have never used a Monadnock, i have handled one but never used it. From my impression while handleing it i would say the ASP locks up more solid, the ASP feels lighter as well, grip is about the same. Since i never hit anything hard with it i cant comment on its ability to take punishement, but i have beat the crap outta my ASP and it still works fine. Hope that helps!

didnt read all your questions, sorry, will answer now

1) Mine has NEVER locked open and been unable to close :D

2) 21" ASP is 16-17Oz

3) I find the 21" to be perfect for EDC, unless thay have something longer than a baseball bat i feel confident i could take out any individual with my 21" ASP.

Rifter: I assume you mean it has never locked open PERMANENTLY?

Also, do you have the steel or Airweight?

Thanks

drjones, Here's what I have, according to my kitchen scale and Stanley Tape Measure:

16" ASP: wt. 12oz, actual length 16"

21" Steel ASP: wt. 16oz, actual length 20 3/16"

21" Lightweight ASP: wt. 8oz, actual lenght 20"

21" AutoLock: 22oz, actual length 21 1/2"

The 16" ASP is not much use in reality and the Lightweight ASP won't stand the strain of lots of bag work(much like the airweight revolvers, carry a lot-use a little) so you'll need a steel one to work out with.

I like the AutoLock for on and off duty because it locks open and can be used for thrusts and joint locks without fear of collapsing, and because if you hold down the button and jerk it open and closed it sounds similar to a pump shotgun being racked! In the dark that could buy you some escape time!

Hope this helps.

Depending on where you hold the handle on either version you may not be gaining anything from the length. I found after carrying the 26 for a few years on a daily basis I noticed in order to swing it with authority I was choking up on the handle.

Grab your baton and measure from the bottom of your grip to the end. I only gained 1/2" over the 21" baton. I then switched to the 21".

21" baton
-when carried it rides lower in the scabbard and doesn't protrude into my ribs.
-I don't loose any reach.
-more usable in the closed mode
-more controlable and swings faster
-harder for foe to grab
Now I know 'real men' want the biggest knife, fattest bullet, fastest car and prettiest wife but in this case as an ASP INSTRUCTOR I have found few that really benefit from the longer baton.
