Has anybody seen or made an AS with handle slabs? After seeing the Piano Key, I am tempted to try to make a similar handle on my AS. Thanks for the help.

I don't recall ever seeing one, but it has crossed my mind.

I actually contacted a well known maker who does mods to knives and he wanted almost double what I paid for the AS new from the shop to polish it up and put micarta slabs on it!!

I decided I liked it just fine the way it is!

If I could find a maker to put micarta slabs on it for a reasonable price I probably would have it done though.

I saw this one by Gary over on the Rat Chat board. Not a full handle (not a Busse either), but a nice insert.

Not too get technical on you, and I could be wrong here, but that looks like an overlay to me, although it isn't all that clear from the picture

Walking Man, is it possible for you to post one thing that isn't controversial, condescending or negative?

I honestly cringe when I see posts by you now, even before I read them.

I know that you think you are being helpful, and at times you are, but sweet Jesus, tone it down a bit.

I have been called out on being opinionated and a jerk in the past, and they were right.

Just a word of advice from a fellow Busse fan.

Ooh. I like that Shaker that Cyder posted. Looks like a poor man's Bad Apple. I sense some interesting doodling coming on.

Rick - have shaker, will modify

I did say I might be wrong. Maybe I've just been hanging out in W&C lately. Really, I don't care that much. I'm a nice guy in really life, and like many postings, the words may not convey the sentiment, or the reader might misinterpret one's feeling. It's a strange place.

WM, hey it's cool! I know it's hard to understand someone here on the net without body language and tone of voice.

Sorry if I came off badly.

NOT an overlay, but a very well fit piece of wood. I know, because I made the suggestion to Gary to do the work and have seen the knife with the insert.

OK, on a full tang fixed blade, what is the difference between an "overlay" and a "handle?" Seems like the same thing to me...

Yea, the new Rat Shaker has a big hole where the wood is, makes the possibilities endless for creative persons, I forsee some nice aftermarket customizations coming out of this one. :)

A wild guess between overlay and handle, an overlay might be a very thin or smaller than the outside dimentions of the knife. And a handle is an all encompassing term for the bits sticking out of the back of the blade? ie, whatever the user grabs onto when he uses said knife? Dunno, I just cover the sharp bits :o

Well.... It's a matter of opinion I suppose. I guess it depends on how much space there is between the material and the handle. IMO, I don't really like that type of handle with material sticking out, it's really not too comfortable, and really, is a cheaper way of putting a knife together, because you don't have to take the time to make it flush. I don't mind overlays, though, because they don't get in the way, and they don't interfere with your grip.

Although Greg calls that one an overlay, because it will effect how you grip the knife, I'd call it part of the handle, as do most manufacturers.
