I am looking for a solution to a problem I have been having while hunting and I was wondering if any one has had a similar problem. When I go hog hunting I have a lot of gear that I need to carry but I don't have anywhere to put it. I thought a assault vest might be the best soltion given that I need to have a pretty good bit of cargo capacity andit all needs to be conected to me so that I can run in it. It also has to have a holster for my pistol connected to it, something like the Blackhawk Omega Cross Draw vest and a hydration system would be an added bonus. A back pack will not work because I don't have fast enough access to the gear. I am not sure if a vest is what I need and I don't want to make a $150 mistake. If any one has any ideas let me know because I can't think of anything else that would work. I would also like to find a similar assault vest to the one listed above for a lower price.

I also needed to know if there is a decent way to store a fullsize pistol in a Maxpedition Fatboy. Once again thanks for any help you guys can give.

Check out 5.11 Tactical stuff. I have two of their vests and they are great. Especially for a full size handgun. You can see their stuff at Brigade Quartermasters.

I like to go on day hikes, and used a small backpack at first but didn't like the pull on my shoulders. Tried a fanny pack next (a highly adjustable one at that) and it was even worse. The reason being the straps press against the abdomen/lower lung area making deep breathing far more difficult when walking fast uphill. Enter an old surplus LBV 88. I don't even have to fasten the front buckles as I can balance the load front and rear. Far more comfortable than anything else I tried, even though the pockets aren't the perfect size. Check out (search) the many, many variations of tactical vests that would be appropriate for the gear YOU need to carry. Many have holsters built in and allow for add on bags/pouches for whatever you need to carry. A more open vest of webbing and/or mesh, that allows for a hydration bag would be a good starting point. The more open the vest, the better perspiration evaporates.

I carry a Glock 23 or 27 in my Fatboy almost daily. The Glock 22 fits too, but I keep that on my duty belt.

As far as the pistol goes. If you look at the pictures of the Fatboy, you will notice a zipper above the main pocket, not on the pocket. It's on the back of the pack and will hold any full size pistol and both of my H&K 45 compacts with ease. Easy to get at, too.

Fatboy's are great!

BTW: Just bought a Platypus .5 liter collapsible bottle and it fits perfect in the back pocket.
