I have a United Cutlery/Harley Davidson knife with the assisted open feature. I want to take the knife apart because the blade is severley cocked to one side, and I can't straighten it otherwise. I would like to know if there is any concerns opening one of these knives (is a spring gonna go shooting out or I'll never get it back together) before I open it?

Thanks

I have done it a few times, and don't really remember having any problems with the Kershaw knives. It was a while ago so I don't really remember very much specifically. The thing didn't just fly apart as I took the screws out though, it was a bit of work getting it back together in working order.

Just be sure to work in a well lit area, not over carpet etc., and take your time. Pay attention to how things go when it is working so that you can get it back together again. Also if you don't have any experience working with small screws and fittings, or other fine mechanical devices I would recommend staying out of there. Depending on what you mean by crooked, and why it isn't straight you might it be able to fix it anyway.

actually, just be sure the knife is "open" (ie, is unfolded) before opening it up. otherwise, you just may have a spring come shooting out. unfolding the knife removes the tension of the assisted open feature.

When I take apart my AOs I usually have a couple coffee cups to put seperate parts in. As for taking them apart, just as they said keep the blade open or the tension rod might fly out and you'll lose it or get it in the eye ;)

Same goes for putting them back together, blade open.

One more thing, there may be 2 seperate size washers on the blade, make sure to remember which size belongs on which side.

trick I learned (the hard way of course)

disassemble INSIDE of a baggie!

I was dissasembling my buckmark for cleaning, when the extractor and spring went shooting across the room...
found the extractor, not the spring...

gunsmith I went to to get a replacement spring told me about the baggie trick!

if you're in danger of small parts flying, disassembling inside a baggie is the way to go!
