Assisted Opener Storage

I have an assisted opener that will be put away for long term storage. Should the knife be stored (safely, of course) with the blade open to prevent wear on the torsion bar?

Well, if you use the anology of gun magazines, it shouldn't matter for a decade or more. I've read writtings of individuals I believe to be creditable who stated they used .45 Colt Gov. magazines that had been stored topped off for over a decade without problems.

I always figured springs could take a set after a long period, but how long?

Then there is the material aspect, which is generally impossible for the user to determine.

I'd feel safe saying it's okay for a few years in a household enviroment.

I have always been told by "the experts" that all auto/AO should be stored open. But then again they are all factory packaged closed and can stay that way for many years. Go figure:rolleyes:

I store my AO's and autos open. Is it really necessary? I don't know, but I feel more comfortable doing it that way. YMMV.

Kershaw customer support said to store their assisted open knives in the open position for long-term storage.

Seems to make sense. There would be no tension on the torsion bar that way, and thus no possibility of permanent deformity.

The knife is a Kershaw. From the sounds of it, I think I would rather play it safe and store it in the open position. I appreciate all your feedback.

I think the spring is in "relaxed" position when you have the blade partially opened so it will be probably better that way.

Anyways, I doubt you'll find a problem storing them fully opened or closed.
