Anyone know whether assisted openers are legal / illegal / undefined in New Jersey?

I believe the laws pre-date them, but technically, they are legal. I'm not positive on this though.

I'm sure that's what the companies that manufacture and sell them would like to think. I'm wondering whether there is any actual legal precedent one way or the other.

An "auto" knife is one that is deployed by a button on the handle, so I see no way it can be said it is an auto. Also, most assisted openers wont deploy until opened up to (usually) 30 degrees. Most, if not all are also no faster than your decent one hander.

I don't believe there has been a case in New Jersey though where this has been an issue and a judgement has been made on its legality.

What you're saying may be true, but as we can see in NY, the anti-knife-nuts can stretch things a bit when they want to make something illegal. I hope you are correct that this has not been an issue in NJ. (Then again, that doesn't mean it won't become an issue. Who said this was a free country. :( )

Unless the law is VERY clear, I would not carry an assisted opener. Look at the thread regarding the incident in Texas. Remember, also, that a DA can file the charge, and then make political hay that he had to dismiss the charge or lost the case in court based on a technicality. Meanwhile, the defendant has had to post bond and hire a lawyer. It is an admirable thing to stand up for your rights by testing the law, but IMHO the assisted opener issue is a battle not worth fighting, as I have learned to open my EDC folders quickly enough without such devices.
