I am interested in getting an assisted opener, but would like something a little higher quality than a Kershaw Chive. Any suggestions? :o

Take a look at Benchmade's Nitrous Stryker line. Both full and mini's come in D2, and in a choice of American Tanto or drop point blades. The AO mechanics are smooth and the knives are light with full titanium liners. The knives are around $100 and worth the price!

Two questions:

1) Are you looking for something the same size/price as the Chive, and if so do you want it to be a frame lock like the Chive?

2) Exactly what do you think isn't good quality about the Chive?

The BM's are great knives, Defiantly check them out. You can get both the spear point or tanto blade in Satin, PE coated, and coated combo edge.

Also look at the Zero Tolerance 300 series. They are Awesome!

you want a good assisted go no further than the kershaw leek you wont find a smoother, faster opener than that

If a Benchmade knife is good, then why would he have to defiantly check them out?

Okay, higher quality was the wrong term. I meant something a little more substantial than a Chive (or a Leek). Maybe it is the aluminum scales of those knives, but they just don't fill my hand like I want a knife to do.

Price? Preferrably under $100, but I would go up to $150.

Size? Larger than the Chive, smaller than a Junk Yard Dog.

Are there AO that aren't liner locks?

Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Blur, Kershaw Cyclone, Kershaw Speed bump. Those are the ones from Kershaw that I can name off the top of my head.

I personally dislike BM's assisted openers, I love their manuals, but their assisted openers I found lacking for the price. YMMV. :)

Let us know what you get!

The only AO I can think of that is not a Liner lock at the moment is the ZT. But it runs about $235 new.

Hi IJ,

I do a lot of cold weather hiking/camping, and have never used an AO in the winter before, which is why I'm thrilled to bring my Tyrade into the woods this winter.

The tyrade is a really big guy, titanium handles frame lock.

If you're looking for a little bit bigger than the leek, the shallot is a great choice, and there are a bunch of interesting sprint runs going on right now for the shallot (in damascus steel and with the composite blade technology).

It looks like the ZT 300 and the tyrade are a little bit out of your budget, but the shallots fit in perfectly.

The Junkyard Dog is also worth your time, but I think it's a liner lock.

This winter, I'm looking forward to being able to use my knife in the woods without taking my gloves off. Best of luck :)

Man, those ZT knives are huge! I don't know if I have a pocket big enough to fit one of those in. And ya, a little out of my price range. Sure are nice though!!

I appreciate the suggestions though...now I get to go shopping.

Do you buy a knife without looking into it just becase a random person tells you it's good?

He was nitpicking your spelling:

You put: defiantly :p

You meant to say: definitely

Now on to knives with assisted opening......

SOG has a few Assited openers that are very pocket friendly and really fill the hand. Here's a link to make searching a bit faster:

The SOG Trident Folder is a nice one, as well as the SOG Flash II. I hope this helps give you a slightly wider range of AO's to choose from, J.

WOW! Score one for me! Did not even see that:foot:
YAY spellcheker!

The Leeks are very fast and can be had with a 410 stainless frame lock and a number of superior steels. There is also a Scallion 410 stainless frame lock in 420HC and Damascus available. The Shallot is a very fast 410 stainless frame lock soon to be available as a ZDP189 composite. The Kershaw Ti Bump is also a very fast and super smooth frame lock. They can be had on the Bay for <$140 shipped. The Ti frame with the S30V blade make it a great deal.

if you dont like linerlocks SOG makes some good assisted openers (twitch, flash, trident) these vary from lockbacks to the ARC clock so there will never be any shortage on good lock variations. also Kershaw has a framelock version of the Leek that has a seriously strong lockup

I've had bad experiences with the Sog Trident Tanto, I might get them resolved someday--I sent them two emails and they have not responded, maybe time to give their forum a look...
