Would anyone be able to tell me if an assisted opening knife like the kershaw blur is legal in Canada?

Assisted Opening Knives by Kershaw are permitted in Canada. The law statute forbids knives which open automatically by depressing a button on the handle. The Kershaw flipper is attached to the blade, and assists opening. It is not an 'automatic knife' or a 'gravity knife', which are both illegal.

Somewhere on the Canadian Forum there is a letter from Canada Customs confirming that Speedsafe is legal.

This is from Kershaw's website.

What is SpeedSafe®?

SpeedSafe® is the patented, assisted-opening system built into many of Kershaw's best-selling Ken Onion knives. SpeedSafe® assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or Index-Open system. (Index-Open uses a protruding portion of the blade's finger guard to give the user an alternative to the thumb stud. The user manually pulls back on the protrusion with the index finger to open the blade.)

How does SpeedSafe® work?

The heart of the SpeedSafe® system is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by "gravity." In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half-moon track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use.

Is a SpeedSafe® knife a switchblade?

NO! There are many unique features of SpeedSafe knives that make them quite different than knives that are considered switchblades. Unlike a switchblade, SpeedSafe blades DO NOT deploy with the push of a button in the handle or by gravity alone. Instead, the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance??using the thumb stud or Index-Open
protrusion on the blade itself??in order to engage the SpeedSafe system. Because the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance, SpeedSafe knives fall fully outside the Federal definition of a switchblade. However, due to the complexity and constantly changing nature of these laws and regulations, it is impossible for Kershaw Knives to be aware of every restriction in every location in which our knives are sold or carried. It is the responsibility of the buyer to investigate and comply with the laws and regulations that apply in his or her specific area. At Kershaw, we are proud to be able to offer this convenient, secure technology.

In closing, I have 2 Kershaw Speedsafe knives. Both were inspected by Customs and both delivered.

The law has not changed. CBSA is using a new interpretation that flies in the face of existing jurisprudence.

Not sure about a few of these ppl answering (who have said they are "illegal"), but i live in Canada, Provence of Ontario to be exact, and yes assisted opening knives are legal in Canada.
Now its hard to find information online about this as alot of ppl are unsure and assume they are illegal but they are not!
How do i know this?
Go into your local Walmart or Canadian Tire, there they sell Buck, SOG and Gerber Assisted opening knives.
If they were "illegal" these stores would not be selling them, just like they dont sell automatics. And because they sell AO's but not automatics id say that rules out all arguments that they assisted opening knives are "illegal"

Never have i had a assisted knife seized at the boarder either, and ive ordered many. However ive also never had automatics or balisongs confiscated either though.

Admitting to buying illegal items isn't the best policy.
Just sayin.

Thanks for the advice :) but I'm quite certain nobody including any law enforcement who may be reading care... lol Nor will track me down because ive stated owning automatic knives or balisongs lol...
Just sayin...

Incidentally, "they sell it at WalMart" doesn't mean it's legal.

People make this lame argument when they challenge CBSA (or get charged criminally) and they lose every single time.

D-roc, seized by CBSA? That seems to be happening, everyone else should consider strongly that buying in Canada shouldn't have that problem. Seized by police while carrying? different story, without knowing what law it was seized under it would be anyone's guess, montreal may have some local by-laws concerning folders or knives in general.
