I'm interested in getting an assisted opening knife and am looking for your reccomendations. I've handled the Benchmade Apparition and like the looks of it but had trouble with the thumb stud getting the blade to move. I suppose with practice that would improve but I'm also leary of the liner lock. I have axial lock Benchmade knives and love them. I like the SOG Twitch design with the spur on the back of the blade to push the blade out. What are your reccomendations for an assisted opener without a liner lock and with an alternate method of getting the blade to move instead of just thumb stud?

You could look at kershaws line of Speedsafe knives. You push down on an exposed piece of the tang on the top of the pivot which pushes the knife out enough for the assisted part to take over. However I think most of then are liner locks.

Nikx is right, Kershaw Speedsafe knives are tough and reliable (I have 2). I have never seen any other than the liner locks.

Take a look at the Kershaw Spec/Speed Bumps.Assisted openers with a flipper and the stud lock ,a very strong and easy to use lock. You may also want to go to the Kershaw subforum and see what help they can give you.

I agree with the others here....Kershaw is the way to go. If you want a smaller knife I'd recommend the regular stainless Leek, if you want something bigger , then I'd go with the Shallot, they're both framelocks.

The Leek is one of my favorite designs.

Get a Kershaw Leek and you;ll ask your self why you didn't do it sooner! I use to have a Twitch II it was good but the Leek is better in my humble openion.

Skip the Apparition and check out one of the Benchmade Nitrous Strykers in D2 steel. They're fast and well made. This next generation works!

The Kershaw Blur is an excellent knife. There happens to be one in S30V in the trade forum right now... good timing!

Kershaw--that's what they're known for. Blur, Leek, Shallot, Speedbump, Cyclone... etc.

You'll be sorry you didn't get one sooner.

agreed. the kershaw line of speedsafe knives. they use framelocks, liners, and studlocks. also many of the knives have a "flipper" at the back of the blade to push them open (this flipper becomes a finger guard)
peace.

Welcome to the forums jfrye!

Ken Onion patented the SpeedSafe. A custom maker, he works with Kershaw on their designs. In fact, Kershaw produces a number of Ken's designs, at a greatly reduced price. Most Kershaw and all ZT knives are made in the USA, and come with Kershaw's famous lifetime warranty. On the ZT line, designed for LEO and military, "you break it, we replace it, no questions asked" is their warranty. Kershaw also provides free sharpening on all their knives, along with free repair parts.

Check out the Kershaw sub forum here. Ken's site is here, a little history about Ken is here, and he was named to Blade's Hall of Fame this year. He stops by the Kershaw sub often.

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by Kershaw's offerings.

the kershaw speedsafe Leek is one of the most ergonomic assisted openers on the market and it is FAST

the sog flash 2 is pretty good, and low priced
