I just got one of the new assisted Utilitac knives, and I absolutely love it. Except for the size. Is there any chance that we'll see the larger Utilitac II get an assist/G10 makeover at some point? I have an assisted Rat I as well, but it just doesn't have the beefiness I love in the Utilitac series.

I know I'm going to get some flack from the guys who think the Utilitac II doesn't need an assist because of how smooth the opening action already is. That's fine by me. I like assisted opening knives, and I'd prefer the Utilitac II with one to without.

I guess I'm in the camp that thinks it doesn't need it. I could understand if the blade were heavier than it is, but the Uttie 2 blade is not beefy enough to need help IMO. However, if it did have an assist I'd still get it. It'd be interesting to see the Uttie in different handles as well. But then again, I like the handles that are on it now and the addition of G10 might push the price point above what some would be willing to pay.

I agree about liking the handles as they are now. I'd prefer it if an assisted version kept the Zytel scales, but since the Rat 1 and smaller Utilitac got G10 when they got an assist conversion, I just assume that's what would happen to the Utilitac II as well. I'd also like to see the Utilitac (assisted or not) offered in some other handle colors like the Rat folders.

Which handle do you most prefer on the Utilitac 2, square or round?

I only have one. Its the Collector's First Production Run, Joe Pardue drop point with the round handle. So, I guess I prefer that. haha

I have been considering getting the same blade with a square handle though.

Interesting. Was not aware there was an assisted opening Utilitac, but it did lead me to discover the Rat 1A. While I'm not necessarily looking for an AO, the added g10 looks good. Is there a separate discussion here about the 1A?

edit: I see I'm late to the party. found plenty on the 1A.

To give you guys an idea, the Joe Pardue Assisted Opener with satin finish is the one I carry. Of all of the options I have, and getting to play with each knife that comes through here (I take a lot of our pictures), that's the one I keep with me.

We've discussed assisted opening knives without G10 (and more G10 folders without assisted openers) but we try not to re-release products with a single change. If we are going to re-release something, it will either be the same product from before due to demand or something where we've changed at least a couple things up. You might see it, but for the most part we'll try to mix it up to not to be "stale."

Someone asked me about a RAT-II Assisted Opener once. Now there is a knife that doesn't need it.

You've sure got that one right. When I push the thumb stud on my Rat II, the blade flies open faster than any assisted opener I could ever imagine.

To be completely honest, when I started this thread I asked for a Utilitac II with an assist because all of your previous assisted knives were "upgraded" versions of existing products. What I'd really like is an assisted knife similar to the Utilitac II, but I'd like it to be larger. Closer to 5" closed with a 3.75-4" blade. I'd also like to see it with a flipper in addition to the thumbstuds for opening. I'd modify the blade shape to round off the "point" on the spine. I'd keep the handles FRN/Zytel, but I'd offer it in more colors than black (at the very least the same Coyote Brown and OD Green of the Rats) and change the texture to give it a little more grip. I'd also be open to seeing the liners milled out for a bit a weight reduction, but I'm flexible on that. Weight isn't too much of an issue for me on my knives.

Can't make any promises, but I always take notes when I get that kind of thought out feedback.
