I am wondering if the Associate would be the best match up for my Maddog ATAK2. Can you make the original sheath compatible with the shoulder rig? What would the cost of modifying the sheath be? Thank You, Jon Carter

Jon,

Modifying the existing MD sheath would depend on how much room is left on the edge of the sheath, so the holes could be drilled and I am sure the cost of modifying it would not be much at all. You would have to call or e-mail James and ask him.

I would suggest that you have James make a dedicated sheath for it though. His Kydex is First Rate and it would be designed with the harness in mind. You would get the greatest degree of concealment and draw speed this way.

I agree with Don in that you should consider having James make you a sheath. There are a few reasons for this. First, James' Kydex work is fantastic. I don't know if you've seen his Kydex pages at the Blade Rigger Website, but sheaths are one of the things (one of the many things) that James does extremely well.

Second, the cary system is really a system. While the blade is the working part of the system, it can be really any blade and the system won't be affected. The sheath, however, is a part of the harnessing system which means that it should really be made specifically for the harnessing system you buy. It's like using Cheverolet engine parts in a Cheverolet car. Other parts will work, but the Chevy parts will work better.

James sheaths are affordable, and offer a wide variety of options. I strongly suggest that you look into it.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I will look into having a sheath+system made for the Maddog. Seeing as how the ATAK2 is the one that usually goes camping with me, could anyone share their experience with the comfort level of carrying a large knife with one of the Bladerigger systems?
THANKS AGAIN.

Jon,

While I haven't actually worn a Blade Rigger rig in the field, I did once inadvertantly wear one for an entire day.

It was an Associate and I think the blade was a Jashido (if not it was something about that size). I was working in James' warehouse and it was winter in Montana so I was wearing a light jacket. I put the thing on because I wanted to see what all the excitment was about... For the first 5 minutes I felt really cool

. Like a PI or something. And then, I got caught up at work, until, lo and behold, the end of the day rolled around and I was still wearing the thing under my jacked. I'd completely forgotten about it...

I think that speaks to the comfort level just about as well as anything I can think of. But I'm sure that other's have more specific field experience that they can talk about.

Jon,

Although I haven't carried any "large" blades on my Execulite (similar to the Associate), I have carried a matched pair of tantos that are 12" OAL in a double Execulite all day no problem.

The large blades I carry (14" to 17" OAL) are in an SB3 rig. I can carry some pretty monster knives without discomfort. The Al Mar Alaskan Bowie (17" OAL) I've got gets heavy after a while, but the other knives I carry without much effort at all. The only problems I've found with the SB3 is when I'm standing up or sitting down.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Zog,

You said the SB3 gives you problems only when you are standing up or sitting down...can you elaborate on this further?

I think Zog means that there is a print when he is in the act of standing up or sitting down. One can see an object on his back when he bends down or rises.

I just got an associate last week and have been real happy with it. I actually modified a sheath that I already had and it works really well. Comfort was my main concern and I was pointed here by other forum members. I'm glad I made the purchase and would reccomend the system to anyone who is looking for comfort, even for all day carry.
