Asymmetrical grind. Still a Busse thing?

While viewing some youtube clips, where Busse knives are compared to other brands, I have heard some criticism of the asymmetrical Busse grind.
But as I understand it, the asymmetrical grind is a thing of the past? And the two Busse knives I own(Basic 6 and SFNO Le), are not asymmetrical...

Are some of the big choppers still made with an asymmetrical grind?
I don't even know why that grind would be a problem...

I wish it were still a Busse thing on their bigger knives. It's an amazing, low-maintenance grind (when done in INFI at least) that makes it very easy to use a thick knife for carving and shaving. That's what set my asymmetrical B11 way apart from all my other Busses.

Typically, the longer the knife, the thicker it is. That makes it tough to do more detailed chores because of how far away the edge is from the flat of the blade, or how thick the edge also is. The asymmetrical B11's edge was right along the flat, making it ultra usable for small stuff despite its size. You had that durable convex edge on one side but didn't have the difficulty of shaving with a regular convex edge.

I haven't seen it on anything lately, though. I don't know what other knives it was done on, either, but I'm sure it was not many.

No, no more asymmetric edges on normal production.

The Asymmetric B-11's from Blade were a 'gift' Jerry to Will York and some of the older Hog's, who prefer that grind on a chopper. It was the standard edge for a few years back in the early 2000s. I've got Basics, Ergos, Gen IIIs and Assault Shakers which all have asymmetric edges from the factory. You would probably have to go through the Custom Shop to get an asym now.

I noticed the DCBB B10 I picked up off of the xchange a few weeks ago has a very subtle asym edge. Not sure if it was intentional on these, but it's definately not an even convexed edge like found on my satin B10LE.

I like it.

Funny thing is, some of these "experts" in the clips claimed, that the asymmetrical grind made it less usefull for the finer tasks.
Maybe a right-hander got hold of a lefty...

Just goes to show how little trust you should put into a YouTube clip, when they claim Busses are all made with an asymmetrical grind, and it hasn't been dne in years. On their production models at least...

The assymetrical grind was proven to outcut all other grinds when it was being done. However, it was ugly and people did not know how to resharpen it, even though it was easy. So it is gone

That's possible. The B11 I had was right-side convex, left-side flat. Made it good for me as a right-handed person.

I like to think of the cross-section of the blade like the profile of a wharncliffe. That blade profile makes it easy to scribe because you know exactly where the edge is contacting the medium, unlike any profile with a belly, unless you contort your arm really uncomfortably. It's sort of the same idea with the asymmetrical grind of the B11.

I would like to see a folder with any grind.

I'd like to see a asymmetrical grind on the New Busse FOLDER.

For OP, the shop will still do asymmetrical grind on request on most models. I ordered my TGLB with it.

EDIT: Asymmetrical grind is NOT available on the TGLB. Below is what Garth had to say about it:

"As far as the TGLB after talking to Jerry he said that an asymmetrical edge doesn't work well on a hollow grind. I tried it own another one anyway and he was right. The hollow grind just does not allow for the heavy edge on one side unless you take it very high and get back into the fatter part of the bevel which would have drastically changed the profile of your knife."

Come On Jerry! Folder!
fwiw, my favorite Busse grind is the convex, which is on my Pork Shank.

Some great insight here, thanks.
I am not in the market for an asymmetrical grind Busse, I just wondered why it was mentioned as an issue, when it is no longer done on the production models. AND it seems to work great for all you guys...

The day I am sitting which a bunch of cash around me, I may go for some croocked INFI.

Nice! Has anyone ordered some asymmetric Infi from the custom shop as of late ?
With the custom shop having been closed to orders for a few years, it seems unlikely. But who knows. Next time you buy a Busse, ask for an asymmetric grind... then report back.
