AT&T Phone and Internet trouble

We have DSL through AT&T and it's gone down in the afternoons a lot on and off over the past year. I discovered if you call the number it starts working again. It does no good to call the repair center as it's back up with a incoming phone call and they can't (or won't) find the problem. I've about had it with them and I'm thinking about a wireless service, but those are more money. I'd like the service we have now to work correctly, rather than spend more money.
Anyone ever hear of DSL and phone lines going down and coming back when dialed from a outside line? It's not inside the house, as I've hooked up to the box outside and it's dead there as well.

I've not heard of that particular weirdness before now, but I've seen enough other problems to believe you. Last Friday, Bladeforums started lagging severely for me, but when I started checking, everything else was lagging severely as well. Ran a speed test and got 20K download speed and 422K upload speed. At one point it got down to 4K download, but still with 420K upload speed. Saturday morning it still wasn't working, so I spent forty-five minutes on the phone with tech support getting assistance that might have been helpful if 1) I was a computer illiterate moron and 2) the problem was in my software, but neither of those things was the problem, so he started a trouble ticket. That department called me back on my cell phone and I spent another half hour trouble shooting before he determined the problem was my old modem. Funny thing, the only place around here that stocks DSL modems had sold out in the last 24 hours before I got there. :rolleyes:Then the problem mysteriously went away that afternoon. The automated system left a message on my answering machine to say the issue had been resolved and the ticket cleared so the technician scheduled for Tuesday wouldn't be coming after all.

I can't describe how angry I was when AT&T bought Southwestern Bell and became my phone company and Internet provider. I've been very tempted to shut the phone off and go to wireless internet. I'd probably have done so by now if the wireless antennas didn't tend to blow out of alignment here.

They have replaced modems, ran a direct line to just the computer, replaced the DSL box and the main box on the outside the house. The repairmen can't find the problem and the last one said he thinks it's in the office, because it happens always in mid afternoon. Once the number is dialed, it clears up until the next day, or next time. It can stop and not do it for months, but it can come back at any time and do it everyday for weeks on end. AT&T seems to not really be too concerned. I guess if it doesn't go out and stay out for good they are never gonna fix it.

That pretty much sums it up, right there. At least until they lose a few million customers, they don't care.
