Hello everyone,

Does anyone here own an ATAX? If so, how effective is it at performing the uses described by doing a search: http://www.survival.com/atax.htm

I have a hard time beleiving that it would be more effective than the tools it trys to mimic. Could someone please enlighten me?

Thanks for the link. I tend to agree that having tools designed for certain jobs are better.

i have an atax, and it does what it says it does, you can chop with it, it will serve as a knife, it has a bearing for a fire bow and the handle slabs contain fishhooks and a small ferrro rod. it is a very sturdy tool, would take some serious abuse to break it, the edges are very sharp.

when this was designed it was seen as a compact tool that could easily be carried while on horseback in a bush plane or 4 wheeler where a large blade might not fit, it gives the user a bunch of tools in a small package. it was meant to be accompanied by a smaller knife like a swiss army knife or leatherman tool that would complement it uses. all on a belt easy to enter and leave vehicles with, so that you would have it on your person if you needed to make a hasty evacuation.

for this purpose it does well, more than a few of these have been sold to bush pilots. since i carried a brown bear combo for a while this was a very similar tool set. have used mine for awhile and it is handy for belt or backpack use when you dont want to carry an axe or large chopper. i skinned a couple of white tails with it to see how it did for that and it was a little heavy, but got the job done easily. it does take off leg bones and sever neck vertebrae easily. i have no tried to hammer any nails with it,

it is made by tops does hold its edge well, and all in all i find it useful to do the things i like to do it also does not scare the bejeebers out of some of the camper folks out there.

I wouldn't mind playing around with one to see if it suits me but a $200.00 USD thats a little much for me.

Agreed. For that money I could get a Wildlife hatchet, a Mora of some variey and good Leatherman. Three tools that perform their function quite well. Thanks for everyone's responces. My suspicions have only been confirmed.

The $200 is the part I've never been able to understand with this thing either. What is it? A piece of 1095 that looks like it was water cut, and two pieces of micarta and the bolts to hold it on. No reason for that mark up. And the cost of getting DVDs made isn't part of it either. Halve the price and they'll sell enough of them to compensate for the reduced margin.

Personally, I put it into the same category as the Tracker. It works, but it isn't as intuitive. Lots of bells and whistles, the ergonomics look "interesting" and it puts too many tools in one place.

Two hundred bucks for that monstrosity? GIMME A BREAK!!!

Ron Hood is laughing his ass off all the way to the bank I'll bet.

I'm sure it does all the jobs asked of it but I've never been a fan of a do it all tool. If I loose a tool, I don't want it to be ALL my tools.

What did the Offspring say....Gotta keep'em seperated.

Two hundred bucks is steep, but I've always found all of the Tops offerings to be pricey for what they are.

I remember when they first came out and thinking that would be a nifty tool to have but the price seemed too much for me.
Forgot about it then seen Tops was making them now but the price is just too much for me to consider.

For $50.00 I'd probably buy one.
For $ 100.00 I don't know if I would, probably not.
For $200.00 no way.
I don't care how well made it is, that's too much -- for me, other's may decide otherwise.

Too bad, I would like to have one.
