ATC or Coldsteel VT hawk?

I've been visiting the ATC site and drooling over their Vietnam Tactical tomahawk for quite sometime now. Out of curiosity I decided to look at the Cold Steel hawks on their site and low and behold I see that they have a VT hawk for sale as well. With my untrained eye it looks to be about the same design as the ATC one and they state Mr. LaGana as the designer also.

Now, I know that ATC has the official license to make the LaGana VT hawk but what is the major differences between these two hawks? I'm leaning towards the ATC version just because the company seems to be a real patriotic and upstanding business which I like. But the price tag on the CS version is over a hundred dollars less and that is real tempting.

Could someone here give me the low down on what makes the ATC worth the extra dough? Give me the sales pitch.

Hi Bullwhip...love your screen name.

The Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk sports a hickory handle and is an imported forging of 5150 steel. It is an economy grade representation of the Vietnam Tomahawk. Cold Steel has never had permission from Peter LaGana or his family to make the claims included to their ad copy of its status as an "exact replica" because in our assessment, it is not.

The Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk sports a synthetic handle and assembly method which resists loosening and breakage from the harshest abuse.

The head is drop forged from American 1060 steel (as it was in 1966), in the US, and is expertly heat treated and finished, in the US. It also meets the specific dimensions, quality, and design specifications established by Peter LaGana.

There is simply no comparison between the two...

Hope this helps...

Mr. Prisco,

Well, I'm sold. As soon as I scrape some funds together I'll be placing an order.

I notice you're location states that you are in NJ but your web site says that ATC is here in WA. Have you moved? I'm located in WA adn would love to tour your production facility if possible.

We're what's affectionately known as a "click and mortar" business instead of a "brick and mortar". ;)

However, the NJ reference in my profile is just old...I'll update it.

Get with me offline if you want to get together.

I also would like to add that the cold steel version is as sharp as a bowling ball and the handle will get really really loose if you chop anything harder than butter and when it happens the head will fly.

Hi Bullwhip!
well...I've been in the same situation like you so I think I may give you some advice!
I've been looking for Tomahawks in quiet some times! So the most available was for me Cold-steel tomahawks...I buyed 2! A norse hawk and trail hawk! I tough they'll be OK since I've been well served by Cold- steel knives! They came completely dulle with no EDGE at all... After some time on a belt sliper they got something that looked like an edge but without great sharpening... So I tryed to throw with them and had to fix the head everytime because the head allways loosened from the handle...
Then under a deployement I saw some GI's playing with a Vietnam hawk from ATC...I took it in my hand and believe me buddy then I saw the light!!!! When you take one of this hawk in your hand I can tell you the word TACTICAL find it's signification! They're vitualy unbreakable, well balanced and SHARP!!! This hawk is a tool, and a weapon! So I ordered one! Beside the product himself I got world's best service (ordered it on thursday from Europe got it on monday!!!)

I could speak about this hawk for hours, but the best for you is to take one in hand, then you'll understand their reputation, and price. They're every single $ worth it! Everybody I know who took mine in hand want one!
If you want a comparison, compare a Cold-steel hawk to a ATC hawk will be like compare a military Hummer to a yugo!!!
Hope it help! There is still some available at Knifecenter.com

My best friend bought one of those CS numbers and tried to reproduce that lovely drum piercing trick. It did not work at all and honestly he told me it was an over priced POS.

Regards,

Tom Carey

Guess he didn't read the fine print of their warranty.
