I purchased the Atlanta Cutlery Primitive Bowie, and I am very happy with it for what it is. I was watching The Alamo again the other night, and I noticed that the Bowie knife used in the movie had a dull gray blade color rather than the high polish that mine has. I was wondering if there is a way to dull down the polish on my blade to make it look more "primitive." I thought about steel wool, crocus cloth, valve grinding compound or sandpaper. I don't think the blade is stainless steel, so dulling it down shouldn't be too difficult. I don't want to disassemble the knife. Any suggestions? Thanks, DougT.

if you want a real primative looking knife just use it hard for a week or so, dig some holes, cut some charred wood, if its high carbon steel i think u can stick in it vinigar for a while to get a patina on it.

for a carbon tsteel patina, try any red hot sauce in those little bottles.
coat lightly and let it sit overnight.

It says INDIA on the ricasso doesn't it?
, took it to a CNC grinding shop and had 'em grind a wide hollow grind on it,excellent weed whacker. And the tip is still there.I beware of the handle attachment.

Doug:)

yeah. I have had my primitive Bowie for about 2 years now, and I think it is time I dull the blade down a little bit.

Real antique bowies were not "primitive" at all. The knives in the movies are props-plain and simple. They are not accurate reproductions. If you want it to look like the movie knife, spray paint the blade silver. That's what they do on prop knives.

The bowie you bought from AC is made by Windlass. It is high carbon steel and will take a razor edge. To give it a patina, use a good cold blue. Rinse it off as soon as it is as dark as you want it. Dry it and use a Miracle cloth on it. It will go from blue to gray. WD 40 and 0000 steel wool works for this as well. I did this on a dagger from Windlass. I also have a Primitive Bowie. It is a copy of the Musso Bowie which some believe to be an original knife of Jim Bowie. It isn't junk. It's a very good reproduction of an early big bowie knife.

I did exactly that and it came out exactly how I wanted! I will post up pics in a while. Thanks Victor!

I'm glad you are pleased with the results. Some people mistake the Windlass Steelcrafts bowies with cheap stainless models. Atlanta Cutlery's bowies are handmade by the same folks who make genuine Gurkha kukris and swords for the USMC.

Yes Sir!

I'm very pleased with the patina I got. I really think it came out great.

Nice, Colonel Bowie, very nice. I got one of those Gerneration 2 Iron Mistress Bowies, too. I wanted their Musso Bowie, but was too late. The Windlass version is actually closer in size to the real Musso anyway.
