Atlantic Salt

Hi guys. I've been extensively shopping around for an EDC. I was mainly interested in fixed blades, as folders have just always seem to feel like they're going to break on me. Granted, I've never owned a really quality knife though.

But the Atlantic Salt caught my eye; I love the blade profile on it. I was wondering, what's the locking mechanism used in it? I can't seem to find reference to it anywhere. And is it a good one compared to other methods?

Thanks.

It has a lock-back. Mine had good solid lock-up out of the box with no play and is still going strong ~4 months later. I have complete confidence in its performance within the scope of its design. Lock-backs are generally very well regarded for their security. The real star is the H-1 steel. I usually carry mine IWB against my skin when running, biking, and swimming. Despite all the sweat and water exposure, there is not a single trace of rust on it. It's a great little knife and you probably won't regret picking one up. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. I was beginning to wonder if I was anathema or something; nobody's been answering my posts lately, heh.

:)

I don't have the Atlantic Salt but I do have the Salt 1 and I've been carrying it daily since buying it. I take it with me on my daily 20 plus mile bike ride and when I'm working in the yard. Sweat, water, and salts don't affect it. It is a great knife. H1 steel has surely found a home in my pocket.

Everyone kept telling me that the plain edge wasn't as nice. I now have one of each and actually like the plain better. It does dull faster than the serrated but it isn't fast enough to make me stop carrying it. It seems to be somewhere in between AUS6 and AUS8A to me in edge keeping.

STR,

Ed Schempp was telling us that, the more you use and sharpen H1, the harder it should get. One of the forumites claims the H1 is comparable to AUS-10.

Very Interesting Steel
H-1 is an austenitic precipitation and work hardnen steel; a very different animal than we are familiar. This stuff heat treats more like Beta Titanium. The serrating process is part of the work hardening to bring the most out of the steel from the box. The serrated version cuts with the best of steels. The plain edge out of the box will not cut as well or hold it edge as well as the serrated version. The plain edge will probably improve with age and use, and sharpening. Theoretically it should get harder to sharpen it the longer you own it and the more you sharpen it and eventually cut with the plain edges of the best steels...Take Care...Ed

You may have something to look forward to.

Yeah, I wondered about that. I think that is why everyone was saying the SE was cutting up there with the exotic steels and the PE wasn't. I really like the steel.

I must say the Salt 1 was the underdog going in up against the likes of the CJ, Para-Mil, Manix, Chinook, Veile 2, Delica, Endura, Native, and a Catcherman. Most all of them have been sold though in favor of the Salt. I kept the Catcherman but only because I love that thin MBS26 blade for the kitchen. I got rid of all the others because the Salt and more specifically the H1 steel just won me over.

If you had asked me before buying it I'd have said that it would be the Manix or the Para Mil or the CJ that ended up stealing my heart. But in the end the Salt couldn't be beat out by any of those for my needs. It had a lot to do with the H1 steel but that 14mm Spyderhole is also one of my favorite things and now that I added the only thing I missed, (the CJ finger rest) I love it all that much more..

I used a Pacific Salt for a long time, until I got an Atlantic Salt. Fully Serrated. It's my EDC secondary knife. I too carry it IWB, and bike around with it in this 100+ degree humid weather. After riding, it's covered in moisture, but nary a hint of a speculation of a possibility of a trace of rust. I prefer the utility of the Rescue style blade over the Pacific Salt, but my VG-10 Rescue got rust spots pretty quickly carrying it the way I do.
