I'd been rather unhappy with the coarse stone that EP offers, so I ordered the Atoma 140 grit diamond stone.

It's super aggressive and so far after several knives it's still cutting into steel like butter.

Just thought I'd share here. after shipping it was $85, and I think it's worth every penny.

The Atoma's are definitely a step up. I will be curious to see how many reprofilings they are good for. Mine have 5 on them and are still running strong. For $75 bucks, they better still be going strong after 50.

I am discovering that. It's handling my wife's cheap Wal-Mart kitchen knives, but even my Rift with its simple 154CM takes a long time.

I found some "Ruby" stones at Congress Tools that is hard aluminum oxide that is marketed as "an aggressive cutting stone. Very good results and finish on all hard tool steels and exotic metals. Maintains shape, load resistant." They're a ton cheaper than an Atoma as well.

I'm interested in seeing what kind of longevity you get out of your Atoma to see if it will be cost effective to get compared to these others.

If you let the Atoma do the cutting versus bearing down on it they should be good for a VERY long time.
