I know they are not in the same range. But I am starting to think that all I need is a coarse (140) and a finer in (600).

I was wondering which one is better. And which one will last longer. I have heard that the dmts don't last long? I live in a remote country so I will not be able to bring this stuff very often.

I have atomas. And don't use any of them for knives. I bought and use them for lapping stones. Dmts if you use them without unusual pressure they should last you thousand of sharpenings. An x coarse/fine(220/600) should be all you need. You can get one plate with different grits on either side. I also have the venez. If I had to pick one sharpener I think it would be the 220/600.

I have very little experience with Venev, just the 1200 and 2k.

I recently paid off my van and celebrated with a few more Atomas. I like them more than DMT, haven't owned them long enough to comment on longevity.

The 140 and 600 would be a good pair, maybe even jump all the way to the 1200 on a microbevel.

Ultrasharp is a good stone too. For DMT, I far prefer the interrupted surface over the diasharp surface. Plate quality seems to be a lot better on the interrupted ones.

I have a set of Venev stones and they are probably more than 4 years old and they show very little wear.
They get used very often too.

My DMT plates are not as sturdy.
They are more aggressive than the Venev but they will shed diamond if excess pressure is used.

I do have a set of Atoma slurry plates that I got from CKTG and they have held up well but they don’t get used as often as the others.

Are you planning on sharpening freehand or sharpening with a guided system, with the Venev stones the 400 800 and 1200 stones are great finishing, you start off by using a 140 or 400 grit Atoma diamond plate and then move onto the Venev stones.

I'm of the belief, at least currently, that the incremental differences in the final result between these products can easily be negated with diamond compound strops, especially if the substrate can hold the compound towards the top, and cuts well with feather-light pressure.
