Got the ATR 2 in today and have been playing with it a lot. My plan was for it to kick the PM 2 out of my pocket and it did. I never really liked the PM 2 because of the handle, to small for my hand and just never felt right. So when I saw the ATR 2 was coming out, the hope for a better EDC was on. So the story goes like this.
I am a Military fan boy big time, I use to EDC one and it was my favorite folder of all time and still is. I have purchased more Military models than most but not all. Then I moved to the great state of Colorado where the Military is made but the knife laws do not permit a blade over 3.5 inches to be carried concealed. So I started carrying the PM2 and while it is ok I just never fell in love with it.
Ok! so why does the ATR 2 kick the PM 2 out of my pocket. Handle feels way better on the ATR 2. I love the G10, and the nested liners but the size and shape is the key. I love the Cobra Hood, I think this should be on more Spyderco Knives, really makes the thumb happy. The handle width and the belly feels as close to perfect for my hand that I have found on a knife. So the big issue I had with the PM 2 (The Handle) is just the opposite with the ATR 2 in which the handle and the Cobra Hood are far better for me.
A few other things about the ATR 2. This knife feels solid and has heft to it but not to much. When you pick it up you know you have a knife in your hand. Yes because it was a new knife, it was stiff but a little oil and working and it feels fine now. Knife carries great in the pocket and is a little thinner 1/32 (a hair) than the PM2. Is it worth the $211.22 price I paid and is the same price all the major online dealers are selling it for. The answer is Yes. I will EDC this knife until I find something better, I just don't think that will ever happen unless Colorado starts letting us carry a 4 inch blade on a folder, then the Military will find its way back into my pocket.
So thanks Spyderco you have a winner in the ATR 2.
