ATR construction question

I became the proud owner of an ATR today.

On the inside of the back of the knife the side of the lock, half way between the lock relief cutouts and the front of the lock is a small stud, looks like a screw head sticking out.

What is it there for?

TIA

I think it's there to limit lock over travel to prevent springing or jamming.

I also thought that that is what it is there for but looking closely there seems no way that button will contact anything even if the lock overtravels?

The button prevents the lock bar from swinging too far [/I]away from the handle as the lock is disengaged.

Sorry but I still cant see what it's there for.

If as the lock engaged it would over travel missing the back of the blade completely, the end of the lock bar would touch the inside opposite handle before that little button touched anything.

Come on Sal, put us out of our misery.

Please re-read my post above. The button has nothing to do with limiting lock engagement. It is only for preventing the lock bar from bending out too far as the lock is disengaged. If the button wasn't there, and you pushed the lock bar too far to the outside of the handle away from the blade, you could potentially weaken its tension that is needed to positively lock the blade. You don't see this feature on too many integral locks, but, for example, Strider has added a similar feature recently to their SNG and SMF folders. Their implementation of this overtravel limit was designed by Rick Hinderer, a custom knifemaker, who uses this on his own folders.
This device, while certainly not necessary for normal knife operation, is a nice feature to add to prevent long term wear on the lock, especially if the user is a little over-agressive in disengaging the lock bar.

Hi JKI,
Excuse me while I bend down and kick myself!!
I can see clearly now (as the song goes) what you are talking about.
I think a lot more people who read this thread now also do thanks to you.

:) Used my ATR for the first time tonight. The knife fits neatly in the front pocket of my jeans without to much weight or size feel. I am left handed, so the locking mechanism takes just a little getting used to. I find myself wanting to disengage the blade like it was a liner lock, instead of reversing it in my hand to release it along the back spline. I don't think I have ever had a blade that felt as good in my hand as this knife! It is better than any Strider, Dominator, Benchmade Presideo, CRKT Crawford, or any big folder you can name. It cuts with authority. Looking forward to cleaning about 15 deer this year with it. What a tool!!!!
