I got this in this morning. Checking it in I note the owner, Robert, requests a blue anodized titanium low rider and he stressed 'my thinnest version' which usually means he is among sheeple so we'll try to make this one blend in with a bigger pen I guess. I'll see what I can do Robert.

Here it is before.

I definitely do not want to modify the beautiful blade. The ATR is already pretty 'functional,' so I'd like to work on the appearance. Indeed, I would like to make it sheeple-friendly in the pocket--I had someone freak out when I pulled out a Caly-Jr at a banquet dinner!

I want the clip to match the knife as close as possible.

The two options I am considering are (1) satin finish the clip to match or (2) to bead-blast *both* the handle and the clip. Here is my impression of each:

(1) Satin finish clip
--PRO simpler
--PRO better match?
--CON scratches

(2) Bead-blast clip and handle scales
--PRO more scratch resistant
--PRO grippier?
--CON more expensive?

Alright, a couple more questions should decide this:

1. Which would make a better match? For the satin clip, would you match it to the handle or to the blade?

2. There is a small 'US Pat.' on the handle that I don't find very appealing. Would it be possible to remove/obscure this text? Would bead-blasting it take it off anyway?

I will check this thread between 7 and 11am your time on Sunday morning. Feel free to go ahead if the choice is clear.

Got it. Scratch the blue. My bad.

I've had so many contacts this month that I just lost track going from memory is all. All is well with the note you sent. Its with the knife and would have set me straight before I did anything anyway.

Thanks though and sorry for any alarm.

I am getting ready to start this one so as it stands now I'll just make a low rider and before bead blasting anything I will post it and you can decide if you still want it blasted I guess. Taking the blade out, bead blasting both sides of the frame and the clip will match it up but the blade of course will not be bead blasted. So, for a total match it might be better for a satin finish. That will take a lot longer of course over just blasting it but if thats what it takes I'll try to do that up and we'll go from there. It can always be blasted later.

Ok this scan does not do it justice because it matches up pretty darn good. Took me a while to get it but I finally found a pretty good match to the grit they must have used at the factory I think. Anyway, let me know if you can see this well enough to tell.

I'd take a digital but since I have to do that outside due to my crappy flash on my cheapy and its winter out and sleeting with ice a half inch or more thick and still coming down at the moment I think I'd rather not. :D

Wow! Looks like a beautiful match with the blade. It is a little thicker than I expected, but I suppose I don't want it so thin that it will break.

I've been looking at some of your other work, and I really like the handle of one of your bead-blasted delicas:

If it is not too much trouble, can you bead blast my handle like this?

Just to be clear, I *don't* want you to modify the blade or the clip, just bead blast the handle scales. Let me know if you can see any reason not to do this. Also, if you can remove/obscure the 'US pat' engraving next to the clip I would appreciate it. I'll leave what to do with the cobra hood up to your judgement. I realize that the handle won't match the blade/clip but it doesn't right now anyway. I suppose the screw heads will match the clip/blade finish so that is ok.

Can't wait for my beautiful new knife! (I lost my caly jr :( while giving my thesis presentation)

ps I don't think there is any legal problem w/removing the US Pat. label--there isn't even a patent number on it! I could post in the spyderco forums to make sure if this is a concern.

Those numbers on the patent info are engraved. I can't remove them. I may have a different non marked clip though. I'd have to look. I can't just bead blast the handle only I'd have to bead blast everything blade and all. Even if I taped it off it would get the blade in places and look spotty. The blade will most certainly need resharpening after blasting. In the past with Spydercos logos I can't remove those blasting it either and they are simply etched on but their etch goes deep. By contrast Emerson's etch usually gets wiped or very nearly wiped out to where you can barely read it anymore.

I thought I'd get it in the mail to you today. But the mail never delivered. I saw him drive down our street but I'm not sure it was my mail man and not a scout truck to see what neighborhoods could be delivered to after the ice storm. We are still getting sleet mixed with rain right now actually.

I apologize but mother nature has delayed shipping back to you at this time. Perhaps tomorrow unless the truck comes later today. I usually get my mail by 9 in the morning or slightly later and after asking some neighbors since everyone is stranded at home today none of them got mail either.

I've already printed the label on the USPS web site and paid for the package to be delivered to the address you gave me my friend. I don't think they do refunds for changing my mind.

I guess if you want to add another $4.60 to the party I could just tape right over it though. I'll work with you and I do apologize.

STR

$4.60 is not a problem. If it won't get to me by Friday (mail office here is close on Sat), please send it to the FL address.

Thanks!

I'll go ahead and reprint it then because I'm 90% sure I'll still have it tomorrow.

Ok its done. Florida is the destination. I will mail hopefully tomorrow but it could be Wed if they don't show again tomorrow. I can't even get in my car and don't care to risk my vehicle on roads covered with ice. So I'm sure there is a chance they won't be able to get down here tomorrow also.
