ATR NIB Sharpness

Like many people, I tried testing the sharpness of my ATR by shaving hair off of my arm. Like every other plain-edged Spyderco I've owned, hairs lept off my arm.

A few moments later, I noticed I was bleeding.

The NIB sharpness of the ATR can cause painless bloodletting.

Now I test with a ballpoint pen barrel or a RazorEdge Edgetester. For the most part...

Christena Glesser showed me a much safer, more accurate way to determine sharpness. Just carefully reach around with the test blade & lightly use it like a comb on your hair. Behind & above the ear is where it feels about right for me. You can quickly feel just how sharp it is, & this method easily tells the difference between 2 blades that easily shave hair.
The most damage I've recieved from this is some cut off hair :D

P.S. I've reprofiled mine & it now has a 30 degree edge , polished to 600 grit. MUCH sharper than NIB, hehe.

Sorry to hear of your dilemma, thombrogan, but don't worry, you're not alone....

My father-in-law wanted to see how sharp the tip was on my Civilian so he VERY LIGHTLY dragged the tip on his jeans pantleg....only to discover the tip parted the denim material AND cut his leg without him feeling a thing!!

Needless to say, he doesn't test the sharpness on any of my Spydies anymore. :D

Considering the intended use of the Civilian...

...keep your father-in-law away from guns, bug lights, and pesticides. ;)
