I had the Passaround of these interesting Spydercos.
Unfortunately I didn't have the time or ability to put these through their paces. I have just the left hand operational, for the moment :)

Group shot of all three

The ATR is a great knife. Opens easily and is quite light in weight. The pointed tip easily pierced every edc chore asked of it. Topside frame lock.
The holes make for the lighter weight than my lum Ti, for example.

The Scorpius is a right little blade. Notice the way the hand becomes centered on the blade without danger of slipping. I liked the notch in the choil end for the finger rest.

Dodo in left hand. I didn't care much for the bill as a tip of the blade. I have the same reservations of the SPOT's blade tip also. Difficult, for me, to sharpen. and sometimes a little uncontrollable with my piercing of things like blister packs.

Both the scorpius and atr have that weird little extension on the end of the handle. Kind of like a nipple or little hook. Did you find it useful? Is it a good design that should be seen on other handles? It increases the length of the knife handle, but does not appear to allow for any increase in blade length. Does it help or hinder removal of the knife from your pocket?

Being left handed, were the knives lefty friendly?

Thanks.

Brownshoe, Good observation!

There are lots of knives with the extension around and about, now. I like the extension and actually seek it out in knives for my edc. Particularly my fixed blades. I've seen the extension in BM's larger blades like the 710 and 806. Also Spydie's Military and Chinook I and II.
It serves to position the hand squarely on the handle and is also desirable in defense situations. You can use the protrusion as a butting or poking device.

With my one-armedness :) , I don't know if it affects the removal from the pocket. Only wear elastic waist shorts and Tees..

The ATR in particular was very easy to open and close lefty. The ATR was also, not too much heavier than the Scorpius. Tho I didn't weigh them.

Brownshoe,

I had a chance to check out the ATR on its first passaround and more recently, a Scorpius that is part of THIS passaround along with a MeerKat. The grip “tails” didn’t cause any problems and do seem to help lock your hand into the grip. On the Scorpius, the tail seems like it could be used as an impact tool for self defense (with the blade folded).

Tom,

Thanks for the reviews/pics!
