I've been excited about the ATR for some time now, but haven't seen anything about it recently. I'm wondering if this model is still slated for production, if any particulars have changed (e.g., steel type, titanium vs. steel handles, etc.), price range, and when it might be available. Thanks for any information.

The last word we had on it was to expect an offical intro for the ATR at the Bladeshow 2002.

We do know that one version will have a VG-10 blade and a titanium handle with an integral compression lock.

No official word yet on what the lower-cost version will be in terms of blade steel or handle materials.

Hold on there. What do you mean lower cost. I want the VG-10 blade and intregal Titanium handle version. This is the way it is suppose to be. Stong, reliable and good looking.

Sal, Please make this version.

What I mean by "lower cost" is that there are supposed to be two versions coming out to be produced concurrently:

1. The expensive (MSRP probably >$200) limited production version with VG-10 and Titanium. Obviously mainly for knife knuts / collectors.

2. A lower cost (MSRP probably <$150) higher production version with VG-10 and probably a stainless steel handle, for mass-market buyers.

This at least was the plan a few months ago. The plan may have changed in the interim.

Thanks Carlos. That's about what I remember hearing too, though I would think the cheaper knife would probably have a lesser steel as well. Steel, by volume, is in fact stronger than titanium by about 20%. It is only because titanium is much lighter than steel that it has a better strength-to-weight ratio. I believe there are some threads on this in the REKAT forum discussing why they use stainless steel liners rather than titanium.

This is the first I've heard of the ATR. What style of knife is it? Does anyone have a picture of the prototype? Jeff/1911.

The ATR stands for "At the Ready."

The ATR will sport the new "cobra hood" on the opening hole. Someone made the good description in this way:
Imagine your ear as the SpyderHole. Now cup your hand to your ear like you are trying to hear something far away. This is basically the cobra hood. It is on the outside part of the hole when the blade is closed so that during opening, it keeps your thumb in the hole even more securely. This should aid in more secure openings under worse conditions.

The handle on the proto was slotted titanium.

The knife carries tip-up because the cobra-hood will not allow a good spydie-drop thereby negating a smooth draw from tip-down.

As mentioned above, it has an integral compression lock (like a sebenza but upside-down

KnifeCenter took a picture of it but it is no longer up. They took it without Sal's permission as he doesn't want pictures of knives released if they are more than 6 months from production.

Handled the prototype at the Blade show.
It is indeed awesome! I can't wait to get one. This might make up for discontinuing the Wegner. ;)

Think O.T.C,

Thanks for the great description. It sounds like a fabulous knife, I can't wait to see one.
