ATS-34 chipping ?

I often employ my old ATS-34 Spyderco folders as part of my EDC rotation. Last week , after returning from a fishing trip , l noticed that my ATS-34 Spyderco Military had some chips on the edge. I did an online research and have found several people claim that ATS-34 is brittle and prone to chipping . How true are these statements ? Is it as tough as D2 ? Or is ATS-34 steel not as tough as D2 ? Does it really chip a lot ? Or was l just unlucky ?

The steels I have in ats-34, 154cm, d2, etc generally roll the edge before chipping.

If you've had the knife that long and this is the first time it's chipped, I'd say that's good evidence there isn't a heat treat or steel issue and just the result of the fact that any steel can chip under the right circumstances. What'd you use the knife for on your trip?

yeah that's kind of what I thought too. I've owned a lot of Spyders over the years from the ATS-34 & ATS-55 eras both. I found both steels to make great Spyderedged models and especially ATS-55 which become one of my all time favorite Spyderedge blade steels.

I've owned plain edged ATS-34 models from Spyderco and Benchmade both and I never had chipping problems from either manufacturer. The two blade steels I experienced some chipping problems with have been S30V and to some degree ZDP-189. But in all fairness I really used the models with those blade steels pretty hard by comparison. But I don't like S30V for a few reasons but I do like a lot of other steels made by Crucible.

Oh , I used the knife for cutting food , fishing line and whittling some wood to make a spit , for roasting some game. After I brought it back home , I noticed a chip on my edge. So I got curious about ATS-34 and chipping :(

What kind of fishing line? Some of them are aramid fiber (I.e. Kevlar) and with the wrong technique can chip almost any hardened steel.

Good heavens ! I never knew that ! But I have cut the fishing line using D2 knives and A Spyderco Gayle Bradley M4 knife , without any chipping

My ATS34 knives are chip free and not babied. One's a BM AutoStryker that's been dropped open from waist height on concrete, edge and tip had a slight roll, no chipping.

Oh , that's a relief to know then :) I was searching through the internet and saw many claims of ATS-34 being brittle and lacking toughness and chipping .
