ATS 34

Yes, I was getting tiny pits showing up deep in the hollow grind. I swithced to Admiral steels cold rolled and havent found any more yet. Also bought a piece of bg-42 to play with. If it seems better I may just have to switch steels.

Robert

I was having the same problem but as you know I just tried Al Bakki in Saskatoon for my heat treat and the blades all came back clean.

I'm hoping to get a big batch together next time so I can try Paul Bos economically. If you like, maybe we could go together on a batch.

Oops! I just remembered you do your own salt bath heat treat don't you. Maybe it is dirty steel.

Regards

Rob!

The problem I'm having with ATS-34 is that the defects are in the steel before I grind and I see them when I'm hand finishing to 400 BEFORE I heat treat them. They look like black voids in the steel and I can actually pick crap out of them with a dental pick.
My 1/8 is ending up less than 3/32 if I finish them at all because of the depth of the flaws.
Rob the belts will be here next week!!!!

i've never had that with ats-34, o any other steel i've used. you should think about switching to bg-42, i like it better than any other steel i've used. i've used 0-1, 440c, ats-34, d-2 and bg-42.

Cant say as I've ever seen that either, even the ATS I bought from house of tools

On a lighter note, that 3V folder blade you and Storch heat treated for me at the symposium actually did harden to 62, guess his files are way harder then most

Hey Rich glad to hear that. I was a little puzzled at the first. I later tried scratching the other blades we did with the tip of a D2 blade I had that has tested at 60RC after tempering and they would not scratch. So going by time and temp I figured yours should be ok especially after one of ED's files WOULD mark that same D2 blade.

Robert ,
Thats one of the reasons I quit using it years ago . 440-C is much cleaner ,more corrosion resistant . more impact resistant, tougher and cheaper .Why use ATS-34?And in my opinion holds an edge just as long !

You only think 440C holds an edge because those Hawaian moose are so small. Actually, on the mainland it's pronounced 'mouse'.
