After my first batch of 5160 gets low I plan on switching to ATS34. (To make Tacticals)
What are the differences in the grinding characteristics?
I am using 3M Regalite and Trizac belts should I make any changes

The Regalites are great. I use 36 to rough, 60 to level, then 120 grit to smooth, and use cheapies (heavy backing) beyond that. I usually switch to Trizacts just for finishing. My finishing belts are a completely worn out 400 grit, then Trizact #16 and Trizact #6. I sometimes skip the #6, and just go to the buffer. That worn 400 leaves no visible scratches. If it does, I abuse it with a wheel dressing stone until it stops doing that.

After the Trizacts, polishing takes about 5 minutes max. For that I use dark green rouge on a 3600rpm hard buff, followed by a couple licks with Scratchless Pink on a loose buff. (Be VERY careful with the loose buff. It has seriously injured more knifemakers than any other tool I know of.)

I also use the dark green rouge on a 10 inch wheel at 3600 rpm but beware that the "green" stuff will go everywhere! I come out looking like a green Braveheart everytime! As Jerry stated, 5 minutes max is all that is needed on the buffer.

I use the scratchless pink on a 6 inch sewn muslin wheel after that. I tend to stay away from the loose buffs.

One word of caution: Don't even think about getting a gut hook near a buffer!
