Can somebody please tell me which are the heat treat parameters for ATS 34?
Is a criogenic treatment mandatory?
Can it be home-made easily?

I have done my ATS-34 at 1975 F. The temp. should be held within a tolerance of a few degrees. I use a computer controlled oven for the so called super steels. With the proper equipment it can be done in the home. I do. I think the tempering temp. is around 950 F. for ATS-34

The steel needs to be isolated from oxygen at the austinizing temperatures otherwise it will decarb too deeply. For that I use heat treat foil to wrap the blade in.

close to the same as 154CM
1950 for the hardening at 15 minutes.
450 500 max for the first temper 450 for 1 hr
for the 2nd 1 hr
you should cryo because the blade will gain
as much as 30% edge benefits and it was deigned
to be done this way also. you can rent a dewar
to use and the nitrogen is cheap compared to
the benefits you'll get. if you leave the blade
in hardening to long you'll find that you'll
need a higher heat for the temper/s. cryo
between the (at least) two tempers. and temper
as soon as it's cooled from the heat-treat.
I use foil if you don't just leave more to regrind.
you should regrind anyway to remove the (I call)
dead layer. you'll find this is soft and leaves
a Smokey finish when you mirror polish. this
does not make for a good edge ether ..
I hope this helps
