I talked to a firend/Spyderco dealer on the phone yesterday. He said he has a few military models in stock including an older model (NIB) in ATS34. I failed to ask if this was a serrated or plain blade but I am curious just the same. Any big differences between this model and the new one apart from steel?

Besides the steel I believe there are some other major modifications in the newer Military's. I don't know them all, but I'm sure someone here does.

Blades & Danelle,

Thanks for the quick response. The link to a previous thread really helped. I also searched out some other threads on the topic. I know where I am on this thing now.

Danelle, good to see you posting here. You are a nice person.

Take care all.

ptn,
Just wanted to add that not all ATS-34 models are the old style types...Spyderco did make quite a few new style C36's with the ATS-34 blades. It was a question I had to ask long ago. Ive got a ATS-34 and a CPM440V and the only difference other than the steel is the ATS-34 one has the grooves cut into the finger choil...Well, at least that was the only other difference...I liked the grooves better so I cut them into my 440

Hi Paul!
Thanks ptn, I am a nice person! Unfortunate that nicety gets you nowhere these days....

Thank again for the help. This forum is a great resource and I am grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge and experience. Spending over a hundred dollars for a knife is a new experience. I guess I want to get the right ones. I feel pretty good about my choices now because of the help I've received here.

I am having my son pick up what I believe to be a new model Military in serrated ATS34 from my dealer friend. My son will be home from school for the weekend and I'll have a new toy in addition to his company.

After all the reading about 440V, it occurred to me that I've heard nothing negative about Spyderco's ATS34 blades. I did read, however, that the new model Military is the one to have. I hope the dealer's phone description is accurate and the knife is a new version. If so, I believe I have made a good choice.

I am puzzled by the dealer's description of his Military plainedge in CPM440V. He says it has a pocket clip attached with just 2 screws. What's that about? It didn't sound like the new model so I opted not to buy it and ordered a Starmate plainedge instead. I'll just have to wait for the "440V experience".

Thanks again, all.

ptn, if it only has two screws on the clip it is the old model. That is not necessarily bad because I have an old model Military in CPM440V and it is a great knife.By the way, I have a serrated ATS-34 Military in the new style. Although i prefer the old choil, the new model has a polished liner that makes it a much smoother and faster opening knife.
