I would like to attach a brass buttcap to a stag handle that I plan on using for a hidden tang knife. I don't want to use a through tang aproach and threat the tang and buttcap. I have seen stag tapers available with buttcaps pre attached(texas knife makers catalog),How would I attach it and be fairly confident that it will stay in place?

I don't know how the supply houses do theirs. I silver solder a screw to the backside of the buttcap, drill an oversize hole in the tang, and epoxy in place, I put a spacer between the brass and the stag. Oh yeah. don't forget to grind of the galv. on the screw head before soldering.

Rob I usely avoid that types of construction on knife handles. Mikes ideal of soldering a screw onto the butt cap would help hold it in place. The only thing I would do differently is to use a brass screw. Fumes from galvanized material are not good for you. What I have found out about stick tang knives is that they are ok for small hunters but not on larger camp knives. The pommel will break off when chopping wood. Good Luck--Ray--

Hello Gentlemen:

Universal Agencies, Inc. (UAI) is the pioneers of the Premium India Stag Taper (or Premium India Stag Roll)with a fitted butt cap.

You can view our web site at www.knifesupplies.com & look on the top link bar for "Fitted Butt Cap" to get the page of the products you are specifically refering to. We do talk about the process of how we attach the butt to the stag.

Here is what we say in our site:

Each Butt Cap is first welded with a threaded rod that is about 1-1/2" long, and then securely fitted to the Stag, using a very strong epoxy to ensure the strength. Then we move to the next process of fitting the Butt Cap to the grain of the Stag.

This product is a great time saver and adds a certain touch only found in custom knives.

If I can be of any more help, please feel free to contact me directly via email at rcchorpa@uai.org or by telephone 678.969.9147.

Best regards & have a great long weekend.

I would braze or silver solder a tang to the butt plate; drill and inlett a hole in larger part of handle to receive it; epoxy all firmly together; cross drill and add a pin. If done carefully I wouldn't worry about it failing at the join.

Okay, all the responses were great and right on, but I have done something you MIGHT want to try.

On skinning knives with stag handles and thin but plates, I do the following:

K&G sells small threaded sleeves that I use. I drill a hole through the brass and then countersink both sides with an 82 degree countersink. Then I get the brass close to finished size.

Then I cut the end of an empty shell casing off (given to me by the customer so that the knife butt matches his rifle).

Clean, clean, clean it all up.

Clamp it all together and solder it up.

That's using a threaded tang which you didn't want to do, but it's a pretty neat finished product.

Good luck,
Nick

Nick I like that twist with the shell casing. I usually drill the brass or nickel cap and use a pin that is turned down with a shoulder. The end that shows can be drilled for a lanyard or round ring or sometimes I cut it off close and polish it with the cap. Bruce

I'd post a picture, but the last one I did and three other knives were recently stolen, so maybe the next one!

Thanks
Nick
