Attaching Gear to your pack

I have been brainstorming over the past days about how I want to attach things to my pack. I will be picking up a proteus soon, as I have already had good experiences with maxpedition products. I will also probably snatch up an REI daypack at some point. But my question is geared towards those who routinely use MOLLE gear. Have you been able to use clips on non MOLLE equipment like basic belt sheaths for knives and such? I was thinking of using some benchmade knife sheaths and my leatherman sheaths along with some MALICE clips to attach them to convenient spots on the Proteus, am I barking up a tree?
Thanks

550 cord and zip ties have been securing gear to rucks long before the was such a thing as molle

zip ties are great but after one season,I would cut and re-apply new zipties,uv rays and stress reek havoc on zip ties, I finally upgraded to carabiners and similiar items.I really like the little D-ring ones at wal-mart,and slip on some tubing to keep from any item for accidentally un-hooking, works great.

Leather strips and jute twine did before that. The point is there is always a better more convenient option for those looking.

I say just buy a molle pack and do it right.

I agree there is always a better way, but sometimes there is a cheaper way than running out and buy the latest and greatest new thing just because.

I use the Proteus-like CTD pack, and attach my MOLLE sheath across the top, using the compression straps. My multi-tool rides in a Rip-Offs brand clip-on sheath, which attaches easily to the accessory straps on the bag. The original Leatherman sheath I have has only a belt loop, and would need something like MALICE clips to attach, but it would have to be horizontal (I think...I've never used them).*

Zip-ties are your friend for integrating non-MOLLE type gear, but the attachment would be kind of semi-permanent.

* EDIT: I'm thinking that non-MOLLE stuff would be best attached in the correct orientation (vertically, that is), by using two heavy zip-ties diagonally, mating the MOLLE loop and the non-MOLLE loop on the sheath/pouch/whatever, but I haven't had to do that yet.

There is a lot of stuff out there called "MOLLE" that isn't actually MOLLE/PALS, just compatible. Last time I checked, Maxpedition used MALICE "clips"- those form belt loops just fine. Same holds true for most of the PALS compatible systems. (But not always so well for true MOLLE and cheap knock offs.) If you can't get them attached to a pack, it's got a lack of compression straps and other such mounting points.

How is durability of this rig? I may test out the concept with the CTD rig first.

Pitdog has a nice buttpack rig... and I'm not just flirting... lol

He always seems to find a reason to post a picture of it. I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in yet... Do a search of his posts.

IMO the CTD pouch is a good durable piece of gear you can depend on. I've had one for about a year now, that I bought to use as a small tool bag to carry drill bits and misc. things like that in. It has held up very well under all sorts of abuse.

Is the Maxpedition made from better materials? Yes, but to be honest it's not $40 worth of better IMO.
