How do you attach your guards. Silver brazing (soldering), pins, both? Any secrets to getting that solder to flow?

Cleanliness is next to godliness! My old weld shop teacher used to say, "Don't you ever tell me 'I cleaned it.'"

Seriously, if silver solder doesn't flow that's nearly always the reason. You may *think* you cleaned it, in fact you may think you cleaned the HECK out of it, but if it didn't flow then you have to go back and clean it some more. I learned pretty quickly that was what I had to do -- you can get pretty tired of obsessively cleaning joints, but nothing was worse than showing that old guy a joint that failed and telling him, "I cleaned it."

CLEAN IS right. Then scrub them with spic and span or comet, or just tsp..and a tooth brush . The other thing is most folks want to overheat the materials. If your using soft solder I recommend ... Radio shack silver bearing solder pt mumber 64-013. I have had great luck with this product. It comes in a .022 dia wire size . This is just right for me . I do not over solder (sloppy) . The right flux helps also . Liquid flux is a problem for me . It goes everywhere. I like the Stay Clean paste flux . I can apply it to just where I want the solder to stick. The other thing is I watch the flux when it starts just a little smoking I know Im hot enough.. Make yourself a burnishing stick from plastic or wood. Burnish the corner to make it look good.

The other option is JB WELD two part epoxy liquid steel.. It works well and seals the joint . It can be burnished with a stick after drying.. and is less messy..

The stay clean paste flux is available from MCS industrial 1800-645-7270 or J&L 1800 521 9520
The solder is available at Radio Shack.
JB weld can be got at just about any hardware..
